Medication Recalls

Canada

The US and Canadian FDA have pulled a ton of childrens cold medications, for under 2, off the shelf because since the 1960's 100 children have overdosed. Some of the medications include tylenol cold, pediacare, infant drops, dimatapp, and triaminic. Do you think they should be recalling the medication???why or why not? Should parents that are responsible with medications be penalized for what negletful parents have done in the past? why?

I think the FDA is overreacting. As a parent, I ALWAYS consult my childrens' pediatrician for the correct dosages before I give them any type of medicine. I think as long as the medicine is used responsibly, there is no need to remove them from store shelves. Also, the statistic that you've provided says that 100 children have overdosed since the 1960's, that sounds very low to me. In 47 years of those medicines being on the shelf, I'm sure there were millions who used it, so 100 overdosing seems like a very small percentage of the total. Also, whose to say that the children who make up that percentage that "overdosed" didn't just have a bad reaction to an ingredient that was in the medication.

yea thats what I thought too but thats what they said on the news. In almost 50yrs its only been 100 just doesn't seem like enough reason to pull it all. But on the other had they said it WAS due to parents overdoing their children accidently. I agree I think that maybe they should make it perscription only or something so that we still have access to it when our babies are sick. I dont' like to see my girl sick so I give her cold medications whenshe is sick so she can be happy. I really think that if they continue on this way people are going to start giving their kids adult medications just lower doses so that they can still have the relief.

That's a good point about people giving their children the adult medications in lower dosages. I mean, if they can't get what they need then they might just turn to whatever it is that they have on hand. I'm sure that alone would cause lots of people to overdose their children, and then what? Would the FDA then be forced to pull adult medications off the shelves as well? I think they should just leave well enough alone and put out more information about RESPONSIBLE medication dosing and educate parents on the subject.

Oh yea definitely. I still can't believe they are actually doing it. Its crazy especially since anyone can overdose on almost everything including vitamins so what are they going to do now pull those as well??? I seriously don't think they are thinking properly about all of this. I think they will come to their senses when they realise what parents are using to help their babies.

I honestly feel that if a child has overdosed that is more of the parents doing then anyones. I always check the bottle to know exactly how much to give my daughter and have never had a problem. Have a great weekend! ~*~ PurpleTeddyBear ~*~

Well yea exactly I do too. And of course it's the parets fault they should be looking at the medication doses and if the child gets into it then they obviously aren't keeping the bottles away from their kids.
