Have you ever been fired?

Fired - You are fired.

Recently, One of my friend was fired from his job because of poor performance. Its not that he didnt want to work, but perhaps it was not the best job for him. He was thrashed because that job was very important to him. He couldn't control himself and went into depression. I tried to console and motivate him. I supported him to look for other job. I have been wondering one thing since then. What goes on in the mind of a person when he/she gets fired. What exactly goes in the mind? Is there anybody who would like to share their experience.

My initial reaction was that it couldn't possible be happening. I had problems with my attendance (out of my control for the most part) but was a great worker when I was there. I figured that my work would speak for itself and that they needed me. But the big boss decided she didn't care and wanted to cut me loose. It took me a little while to get past it, but once things got a bit under control with unemployment money, I started to move on.

You're lucky that you had some unemployment money to fall back on. I worked as in Independent contractor what I earned is what I had. No benefits. It is pretty crazy to finally have to face the fact that you're not needed any more.

once for me. course they didnt use the word "fired" they tried to put it nicely..they used "let go" instead LOL! i actually didnt mind, i really didnt like the job, it was 1 of 2 jobs i was doing at the time. i was rather relieved, i didnt really get along with any other employees. it was a very small business and the employees all new each other from school (which they were barely out of) but i can say that for sure if he depended on that job (whether he liked it or not) then a sense of loss, hopelessness and probably inadaquacy (sp??) is what your friend is feeling. just keep trying to give him confident and the courage to find another job.

I agree with you... My friend is person who is very hardworking and always ready to do his job. I personally think that this was not the best job for him. I am insisting him to try in some other field. Thanks for your post.

So you want to know what goes on in the mind of someone that gets fired. Well the first thing that happens when you're fired is you have to face the reality that you no longer have money coming in to pay your bills. Then you ponder, when are my bills due next, can I pay rent or mortgage, will I be homeless or be able to get a job quick to be okay. Once you evaluate where you're at you can either one way into depression or the other way and take action to improve your situation. I just lost my job today and I'm still in shock. Luckily, my husband has income coming in and we have a little savings. Right at this moment, I'm finding it difficult to do much but gaze off into a stare. I decided to get on here to change my thoughts and to my amazement....Your question was the top of list. Imagine that. Hope this helps a little.

"You're fired!" - Losing a job is not easy...the coping with the loss is a big blow to the one concerned...so to prevent it, one must really be very good in what he's doing, lest he will be the next unemployed amidst us.
Fortunately, I have never been sacked from my job..of course, there are rules in every company, and one of the valid grounds for dismissal is poor performance at work. You're right at consoling and motivating your friend; I'm sure he needed moral support and understanding. Losing a job is really depressing, that's why the more that you extend help to him, the better it is...Of course, on the other hand, I guess that the company should have extended all interventions and exhausted all means possible to keep him--you know, like training him and all...if after all else fails can firing be the last option for the company. Let's just hope for the best for him and that he will finally find a job that he would find fulfillment in...

I've never been fired. I imagine it's pretty hard, because what do you do next? If you weren't expecting it, you wouldn't really have a plan for what to do or how to pay bills.

I wasn't really fired, but when i worked in this furniture store as cashier/receptionnist, after 4 months that i was there (after the summer moving rush) the boss said they had to let me go, cuz there wasn't enough work. Barely 2 months after, i saw that the full time receptionnist's daughter was working there!!

I was fired from jobs a couple of times. I felt hopeless and no good. My self confidence went to zero. Until I had a job working with people did I gain any of that back. He just needs to find a job area that he is comfortable in and he will be back to normal in a while. Try and build his self confidence up.

Oh yeah. I was fired just a few weeks ago. I worked for the woman for about a week. I was clear about my abilities and my shortcomings before I took the job. For some reason, she still was not happy with my perfomance. In this case, I truly feel that she was unrealistic. Her firing me was a blessing in disguise. I found another job within two weeks. In this job, I am doing well. I received an e-mail from my boss a couple of days ago telling me that my diligence was and hard work was already making a positive impact. The two experiences have been like night and day. Sometimes it truly is just a bad fit. To answer your questing about what goes through a persons mind when they are fired... It does depend on the person and how they choose to percieve it, but I can tell you how I felt. For the most part, I knew that it was really my ex boss who had controll and expectation issues more than it was my lack of ability to perform the job. But even with that knowledge, I did have some self doubt. I was lucky that I found another job relatively quickly. My confidence in getting a new job was getting worse by the day. If I had not found a job quickly, I'm sure it would have done more damage than it did. I was a little depressed myself, but I tried not to let it get the better of me. I hope your friend finds a better fit soon. Take care.
