How different was the movie from the novel?

When I first saw the trailer, I knew beforehand that Gaiman had a novel entitled Stardust but it didn't occur to me that that was the novel that was adapted by the film. This was simply because it felt to pop-py. I saw glimpses of Mirrormask and I knew that had to be Gaiman's literature on film but this just didn't give that feel. I haven't read the novel but most of my friends say it's much darker than the film. It was cheesy but it was cheesy-okay for me and the story was still good enough for me to sit and stay for the whole duration of it.

I don't necessarily think that the novel was a whole lot darker than the movie, but there were parts of the novel that were. The biggest thing for me is that the movie really rushed through a lot of parts of the novel, so that it could focus more heavily on the "exciting" parts of the story. And the whole bit with the pirates was REALLY blown out of proportion--in the novel, that part takes up about 5 pages, and does not involve the can-can. :) It wasn't a horrible adaptation, but they dropped one of my favorite bits towards the end, and I wish they had stuck a bit closer to the novel. It's one of my favorite Neil Gaiman novels, very well written, and it didn't really need all of those changes.

Probably the can-can was added to give Robert De Niro more film time. Would you consider Neil Gaiman as a sell-out because of making it really pop-mainstream?

Is there a big difference between the book and the movie version? I haven't read the book yet. But I watched the movie 2 days ago, and I liked it a lot. Yesterday I went to the bookstore to check out the book... I noticed that the book's not that thick, and it was printed in very big letters! So... I was wondering how can a 2hr movie fit in that small book... :)
