Have you ever heard that expresion, "They're nuttier than a fruit cake?" Of course that is referring to someone being crazy, but that is about the only ingredient I know that goes into a fruit cake - nuts. Obviously fruit, but what kind? I think I've had it once, but declined other offers of a taste of this culinary phenomenon. Because I believe that is what fruit cake ultimately is, a phenomenon. : )
So can you tell me what goes into the fruit cakes you have made or eaten from someone else's kitchen? Surely there are cultural differences that prompt different versions of a traditional fruit cake. Or maybe some countries have nothing like it and don't know what I'm talking about.

There are tons of different ways to make this nasty dish. Some are grosser than others but there is some basic ingredients that go in. My mom was one of those nutty people that happily gave this bricks out for Christmas. Here is some of what went in candied orange peel, lemon, pineapple, mixed fruit, red candied cherries, green candied cherries, currants, raisins, dates, orange juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, allspice mace, molasses, and booze of some kind. As you can see there is tons of junk in it. My mom never even put nuts in hers. But maybe this is why they were so proud when they made them, Lots of work, but still they are nasty as all heck!

Yeah, I can find all sorts of recipes. I just wondered if anyone had different things they added to the basics, like different fruits or nuts since I thought most fruit cake had nuts. I guess a lot of people just don't make them with nuts. Probably because the nuts are the ones eating them. : )

I love fruit cake myself. I don't very often eat it due to the highish fat content & I am supposed to be on a diet.
Fruits that can be used are cherries, dark raisons & candied fruits.
Here is a good recipe:
BOILED DARK FRUIT CAKE
2 c. sugar
1 c. butter
2 tsp. cinnamon
2 tsp. cloves
Pinch of salt
3 1/2 c. water
1 lb. dark raisins
1/2 c. sherry
1 lb. candied fruits
4 c. all-purpose flour
2 tsp. baking soda
Boil first 7 ingredients together for 15 minutes. Let cool. (Makes your house smell wonderful.) Add sherry, candied fruits, and nut meats to cooled mixture. Sift together flour and baking soda 3 times. Now alternately mix a portion of dry and wet mixtures together (about 5 mixings). Do not beat; just fold together gently until flour is totally assimilated.
Grease two 9x5x3 inch loaf pans (aluminum pans can be used). Transfer equal portions of batter to pans. Decorate top with nuts and candied cherries, if desired. Bake approximately 1 hour at 375 degrees or until toothpick comes out clean. Cool.
Remove from pans. Sprinkle with sherry. Wrap in aluminum foil and store 2 weeks in cool place. Freezes well. An easy to make, excellent moist tasty fruit cake

A clove is a spice, in the form of a tiny bit of seed. It's hard to desribe the taste. Its kind of strong, not saomething you would eat on its own, but it gives the fruiot cake a spicey taste.

I've always wanted to try making some home made fruit cake. It's not that I even like fruit cake, because the only ones I've ever had were store bought, and tasted stale. I've always thought that I could come up with one that would actually taste good. I would use candied fruit, especially cherries and pineapple, and might use rum.

I haven't ate much of this although the few times I have it's not too bad. I believe it has nuts (not sure what kind) and dried fruits. I think it's gotten a bad name though b/c I actually like it but most ppl don't...at least those that I know.

I really dont like frit cake too much, the ones I have had didnt have much "cake" to them really, mostly fruit and I dont like too much cooked fruit.
I know of cherries and pineapple being in it, oh and prunes and dates....thats all I can think of. Never made one myself.
