We've all heard...stay away from refined sugars and hydrogenated oils and nitrates. Here are the worst offenders.
1. Hot dogs--very high in nitrates. The Cancer Prevention Coalition advises children to eat no more than 12 hot dogs a month. Try buying the ones made without sodium nitrate.
2. Processed meats and bacon--has the same sodium nitrates and raises risk of heart disease. Saturated fat in bacon also contributes to cancer.
3. Doughnuts--made with with flour, sugar and hydrogenated oils and then fried at a high temperature--all a cancer risk.
4. French fries--made with hydrogenated oils and then fried at high temperatures, they also contain dangerous acrylamides which occur during the frying process.
5. Chips, crackers, and cookies--all made with white flour and sugar.
BIG SIGH! Many of my favorite comfort foods! Hubby says, at our age, maybe it no longer matters! LOL

hi estherlou. I just want to add another one to your list of cancer-producing foods. It was said that in barbecued foods, the blackened parts, can also cause cancer.
If these parts were to be ingested in regular intervals, it may be very bad for one's health.

It seems like I heard that back when blackened fish and blackened chicken was all the rage in restaurants.

If we worried about every little thing that might "harm" us then we're not living our lives in the happiest of ways. There's something wrong with everything we do no matter what it is. Like I told my husband, I only live once and I'm going to do it right the first time meaning I'm going to eat what I like and when I want instead of worrying about this and that because I want to be happy and not miserable. Maybe it's the wrong way to think but it is how I think. Live once and die happy.

Ah yes the big "C". Nobody knows what causes it and where it comes from, or how to cure it.
The best they can hope for is a remission for a time.
The opinions are always changing on food as to what is and is not good for you.
A while back they claimed that eating eggs was a fast way to a heart attack or some such nonsense, and that broiled meat would give you cancer just by looking at it... then they all just said oops... new studies now show that this is not true.
So I eat what I want, and I enjoy my life as much as possible, because someday it all won't even matter anyway.
I know I am going to die someday, and nothing I do is going to prevent that. So why should it matter what the cause is?

Hi estherlou! Oh, gosh I do love hotdogs and cookies. Now, what will be my past time food..that will be a problem. Sigh! haha..Thanks for this information. I think I will avoid them somehow but not totally. haha..stubborn me! But of course, I will surely lessen the intake and probably have 5 hotdogs once a month. Take care and have a nice day.

with regard to health,I usually pay much attention to,but I often can not restraince myself from cate, even though I know there may be much jeopardize to my health ,such as the hot dog, french fries like the topic says.Till someday,my health doctor told me I cannot eat this, this, and that...I may crazy~~~
of course, fruit is always helpful to our health, but one point we also must learn, like banana, apple, and some other fruit we can't eat in an empety paunch. So more fruit, more vegetable will be helpful.

I would add smoked meats and fishes, but they are not so commonly used as snacks.

Sometimes I dont think we will see the effects but our children will you know or grandchildren. Look at fabric softners and cleaning agents and dyes in clothing and food it is all to some degree manufacutred. The hormones being injected in the cows and pigs we eat in europe they banned that cause they dont know what the long term affect will have but in USA we want bigger beefer cows and pigs.......

My favorite foods. LOL! Back in the 60's George Carlin did a comedy routine about foods that would kill you. I still remember the bit about bacon which is one of my favorits. At the rate we are going there wont be anything left to eat that wont cause some kind of problem. Sigh. Well we all have to go sometime.

Oh my, it's a good thing that I've introduced them to fish and veggies. But they still do eat the five deadly foods you enumerated.
Thanks for the info.

I know from the start that these foods would really give us problems. That's why I shifted to being half vegetarian. I eat veggies mixed with fish. I am trying to teach my grand children about the bad effects of these processed foods and fries but temptations are always there.
What shall we give then to our kids if almost all of the stuff available now are these kind? Are there really 'clean' foods nowadays?

How many hundred years has the world been eating bacon, using flour and sugar? i kind of find it very hard to believe these have the claimed effects. Much like the old canned fish "scares" from years back. French fries were removed from that list a good long while ago because, as I recall, it was proven they're only harmful to something the size of a mouse. I've also heard that pickled goods are supposedly on the danger list, another thing we've been doing for countless years. But I stopped paying attention to all this hype after a tv documentary claimed lack of sleep causes cancer, and that the only thing worse than lack of sleep was too much sleep. I think I'll go make a hotdog, wrap it in bacon and then have another power nap instead. ;p

Of the ones you listed i eat only chips, that too only occasionally. But there are foods that do not belong here are commonly consumed.
-Soups-if you love them and depend on ready to make soups from stores, watch out!avoid ones with monosodium glutamate.
-smoked foods, barbecues, sizzlers can increase risk of stomach cancers due to high carbon content.
-if you like chinese food then you have risk for contracting cancers because the sauces used especially the aji-no-moto is a potent carcinogenic.
-preserving meat and fish with nitrates can increase risk of urinary bladder cancer and colon cancer.
-avoid chronic use of spicy foods and chillies. It can lead to oral cancers.
