My consultation with the surgeons went really well

My consultation with the surgeon for my gastric bypass surgery went really well Friday. I got to meet one of the surgeons and one of the residents that will be performing the surgery. I also got to meet with the nutritionist for a bit as well. The surgery is scheduled for April 3, 2008 for now, only because I have a battery of tests to go through to make sure my body is in good enough shape to go through the whole ordeal...things like an endoscopy, a mammogram, blood work, etc. But the sooner I get all of the tests done, and the results come back, the sooner I will be able to have the surgery. The doctors just want to make sure everything comes back normal is all. I was actually able to get two of the tests done Friday....the EKG and the X-rays. So at least those are out of the way. Next week, I have my first nutritional class on Wednesday, and 3 more tests scheduled for Thursday. I just want to get them all over and done with as quickly as possible. At least maybe I'll get to enjoy Thanksgiving dinner without having to puree it, since it will be at least another couple of months before the surgery. I'm so excited I can't stand myself right now. It's finally happening! Somebody pinch me! LOL Hugs to all.

I am so pleased for you, that this finally happening for you, as well I can not get over all the tests you have to go through,I know when I had it there were several tests but no nutritional classes and as for pureed food, not even that, for 10 days after the surgery I was on IV, and that was only because my bowels were slow in coming back they do not allow you to eat until you have had your first bowel movement, and then believe it or not my first meal was a hot dog, yes a hot dog served up by the hospital kitchens, you want to discuss gas pain OH man. When my son had the stomach stapling done he was on tube feeding for 6 weeks the tube came out of his belly, nothing by mouth, first meal was 1 tablespoon scrambled egg and after that very soft ground food for quite some time, he had problems with the food getting hung up at the entrance to stomach and still has it sometimes to this day.It is sometimes a bit uncomfortable but both he and I believed it was better than the alternative which was to die of obesity, I lost about 140 pounds and my son about 300. I am still about 40 pounds overweight but that is OK with me at least it isn't the 280 that I was because I am 4' 10 " tall and I was easier to step over than walk around. best of luck on this my friend, and on the bad days and there will be a few, tell yourself it will be worth it. You are so brave. That's a big surgery usn't it? I'd be so scared. I don't know anyone who has had it and in the part of Canada I live in I'mn not excately aure the surgery is done out this way. I'd be interested in having it done if I wasn't so scared of surgery. Keep me in the loop!!!Good Luck with the tests and Take Care!!!

Yes it's a pretty big surgery. The one I'm having done is called the Roux-en Y Gastric Bypass, where a small pouch is created from a section of the stomach (the rest of the top of the stomach is stapled closed and left alone), and the small intestine is cut below the duodenum and reattached to the new pouch. It leaves a shorter path for food to travel through, causing less absorption of calories. On the downside, it causes less absorption of vitamins and nutrients which is why gastric bypass patients are on vitamins and supplements for the rest of their lives. I know they've been performing this surgery and the lap band system surgery overseas, with a very high success rate. But I'm not sure where else it's been done. The surgery is risky, but if it helps to alleviate all the pain and other stuff I'm going through, it will be very much worth it. Thanks so much hon. Big hugs to you.

I think it's good that you are preparing for the surgery but also I want to encourage you to pray for God to heal you prior to the surgery so it won't be necessary. He's healed me several times of things that doctors say couldn't be healed. One of those was when a virule infection attacked the nerve to my bladder and I was unable to go on my own and had to be catheterized. The doctor said I might never get the use of my bladder back but I knew that God would heal me so I got my Bible and a book on healing and sat on the toilet and told God I wasn't getting up until He healed me. Four hours later, I used the bathroom on my own and have been fine ever since. So, even though you are doing everything you can in the natural, I encourage you to get the healing scriptures out of the Bible and stand on them for healing. If you need to know how to do that, email me.

Thank you so much for your encouragement and advice yet again hon. Actually, even though it's a major surgery, I believe it's something that God is blessing me with, and encouraging me to do. I've prayed on this for the full 3 years that I've been waiting, and I get the same feeling every time. And it's not just because it's something I want either. Hopefully you understand what I'm getting at. I'm so glad you were able to overcome your affliction hon. Good for you. At any rate, I will still email you for the healing Scriptures. I need all the help and comfort I can get at the moment. Thanks so much hon.

I realize that God sometimes uses doctors to help the healing process and I'm not adverse to that at all. I just think that you should also be filled up with the Word as well. Email me when you get a chance and I'll send some scriptures for you as well as another suggestion.

I'm so pleased to see/hear you so positively happy and excited. It all sounds so involved i'm afraid i wouldn't be up for it. I suppose you have lots of encouragement ,love and support from your nearest and dearest...I'm truly happy....and hopeful for you. It will all go well I'm sure. Will you actually have to eat pureed food following the op? You are certainly braver than i. I would have no confidence in myself to so readily adapt to the changes necessary.

Hi Katlady2, I'm glad to hear your good news, and trust that all of the test results will turn out okay. You've got 'a lot' of courage, and I hope that you won't have to wait too long for your surgery. Take Care.

Good luck on the tests, Kat. Hope everything comes out ok for your near future surgery. I thought about having that done but figured, if the good Lord above wanted me to be thin, he would of created me to be thin for my whole life, not just the first 8 yrs. of it. lol I need to lose bout a 100lbs but I'm not gonna make it my lifelong goal. If I lose it, I do, if not then I'm ok with it.

That's great news. I'm happy for you. I really hope things work out for you. Yes, it would be better to wait until after Thanksgiving. The food will taste much better, if not pureed. Take care, and keep us informed.
