Doggie licks

Do you let your dog lick you - or your food - like an ice cream cone? Some people say that their saliva is actually an antiseptic so its okay while others say yuck all fine and good but they lick their butts, drink out of the toilet and eat the presents the kitty lives in the litter box. Which camp do you belong to?

Lol. I don't let my dog lick my food at all. She occasionally sneaks in a lick on the lips if I'm not careful. I too have heard that dogs saliva is an antiseptic but i'll just stick with other medicines.

ooooh I don't believe it is a good thing to let your dog lick you but I did have a friend who told me when she was young she used to let her dog lick her face to get rid of her acne...yuk, I guess there could be truth to the saying cats and dogs have antiseptic saliva but i will give it a miss I think....

I love kisses from my dog. I don't think there's anything wrong with them. I also don't mind sharing food with my dog. He loves to take a lick of an ice cream cone or a bite of a sandwich. My son shared numerous ice creams and popsicles with him this summer and it was so cute. He's even done the Lady and the Tramp spaghetti thing with the dog a few times.

Thats so cute. I think every family is different. I don't have a dog, but I've met families who share everything with their dogs as they would the rest of their kids, not just the two legged ones.

I don't see anything wrong in allowing my dog to lick me and give me kisses as long as I know he hasn't been 'cleaning himself' or something, and he's always following me around so I know what he is up to. I do share my food with him too, but only after I'm done eating or on his own plate. I wouldn't eat icecream after he has started licking it so he gets the last of it instead.

Sounds like you and your dog are really bonded. And you take precautions while still allowing him to show affection and share your food. :)

Sharing Ice Cream - Sharing ice cream or any food with you dog. Letting them lick your mouth or eat off your dinner plates.
LOL YUCK! Can you tell which one I belong too? I have heard their mouths are rather clean, from an old friend who used to let her dog lick just about anything she had in her hand, the dishes, her mouth, face, feet......I could go on and on. I was so disturbed by this. lol I guess this is where the old saying about a dog licking his wounds come from, I cant remember the exact phrase now as luck would have it. Bay Lay Gray xx

Dogs mouths do have more enzymes in there then human mouths, meaning there mouths are cleaner. However I'm not down with letting my dog, who loves to "clean himself" constantly go anywhere near my food. And I have to agree with you about the litter box, my dog does that all the time, I can't see how he enjoys a mouth full of cat poop... YUM

Dog's tongues are not clean! I think that is a common misconception. Look at all the stuff they will put in their mouths! They can carry giardia, salmonella, E. coli and other bacteria and pass them on to humans. I don't mind if my dog gives me a small lick on the face, but that's it! I don't let them lick my infant grandchildren, although when my granddaughter was a toddler she thought it was hilarious when the dog licked her in the mouth! Yuck! I had to discourage her from doing that.

So you let your dog share your life - not his germs! :)

i think its utterly disgusting. there was a show on awhile back about dog that constantly ate its poop. when the family was gone, it would try and get things off the counter. they put a video camera and they saw him licking the counters...they did a test and found ecoli everywhere! it was because he was eating his poop and then licking the counters and spreading the ecoli! how disgusting!!!! they were often sick too...wonder why!!! i would NEVER let my dog lick me in the face or share my food. that is so nasty.

That is nasty. I'll tell you something nastier. I took massage therapy in the same school that had medical programs and they swabbed door knows and keyboards and found E-coli, Strepaccacous, semen and all sorts of yucky stuff. I don't think all humans wash their hands - yucksters.

Oops I meant door knobs - I'm having a 'conversation' with my baby (exchanging silly sounds) at the same time.

I don't let all the dogs lick me - just mine which I know is a very clean dog and doesn't do any of the horrible things you mentioned! I hate it when I'm enjoying my ice-cream and she sticks her nose in but if it's really good I continue eating. However if I'm eating and want to give her any leftovers I dont put it on the floor, like others do, but give her from my plate and then wash it.

Haha no that's not my dog.. I have pics in my page if you want to see, feel free. I think dogs are different example boxers are normally with lots of saliva around their mouth yuck!! I wouldn't let a boxer lick me if he was mine but German Sheperds are different. Or at least mine - she's clean is that so bad???

Wow, your dog is certainly unique. I've never heard of a dog who doesn't lick himself, eat dirt, poop or out of the toilet. Not that I have a dog! Is your avatar a picture of your dog - if so he's a real cutie!

My dog licks me, but never my lips. Scientists have proved (and I want to know why they wasted their time) that dog's tongues are cleaner than a human tongue. Well, some might say, a human doesn't lick us. Well, what do they call French kissing?

Thats what I meant with dogs mouths being antiseptic. My husband has been playfully obnoxious and licked me on the face!

I doubt if doggie's saliva actually works as antiseptic. Licking a human being is OK, but sharing food with a dog...I think...is not good.

Well I don't have doggie licks but kitty ones..LOL...and no don't mind if they lick my face or give a nibble/lick of my food--hey they're my kids--I'm by no means a germphobic

I'm not germaphobic either. I'm not super careful like some people - always usuing the germ free stuff on my hands and panicing if a dog licks me. And I get sick every few years. A cold.

There is no way that I will let a dog lick my food and then eat it. I will share my food but it goes in his dish. Our dog loves to lick faces and noses and I noticed that we've all been sick more since he came. I instituted a no lick policy and we haven't been sick since. So for his mouth being cleaner I don't agree at all. Honestly when I see the pink tongue coming toward my face I want to run in the other direction. We had such horrible illnesses when he was allowed to lick us and there is no way that I will let him do it anymore. I'd rather be healthy. I have a friend who shares every bite of her food with her dogs. She will take a lick of an ice cream cone then let multiple dogs lick it and then lick it again herself. I just can't do that. I know it's her choice but I would rather have bamboo under my fingernails than let a dog do that. YUCK!!!! Sorry I know some people think otherwise but from the recent experiences we've had this is where I stand on this one.

They were mostly major stomach illnesses. We were knocked out for a 10 days once from it. He was also spreading colds from one kid to the other. He would lick one on the nose and then lick the others mouth or nose and boom they were both sick. It was awful. I know it was him because the colds and stomach flu stopped within a few days of us instituting the no lick rule and we haven't been sick since. We were getting sick at least once a week before that. It just isn't worth it for us. Now if he tries to lick me I either move away really quickly or lean way back if I'm holding him and move him in the other direction (he's a little dog). I'm surprised that we're the only ones that this happened to. Our kids are young 6 and 4 so they pick up tons of stuff at school and pre-school and the dog was just spreading it around. Now we will actually just have one kid get sick and the rest of us stay healthy.

I allow my dog to lick me. Of course, I have my no-go areas (my mouth and food). The theory that dogs' lick heal wounds is true, though I am yet to find any scientific prove to that (I've experienced the healing powers of dogs' licks several times, though).

I do believe in the power of well belief! You believe they have healing powers - and have experienced it - what came first the belief - or the proof? And one of my other responders said that his dog caused all kinds of illnesses and feels that the fact that since he stopped allowing it and the illnesses were contained to one person, it proves that the dog did indeed spread illnesses. I don't panic if my friends dog licks my baby, I just don't encourage it - he gives very slobbery kisses.

I'm confused - you don't let your mom's - or your ma's dog lick you or your ma's food or icecream? What about your own food - is he allowed to lick that?

I am definately in the same boat as you. I cannot stand for a dog to lick me in any fashion anywhere, and licking my food is definately out of the question. They lick their butts, bite at itches, drink out of the toilet, chew on everything, EWW!!! I am not a dog owner, but if I was that dog would be trained to keep his tongue to himself and his belongings!
