It's finally happened, now perhaps they will QUIT mucking around with fireworks

Burning bright - Fireworks facinate
October 16, 2007 4:53am CST
A couple of weeks ago I posted a discussion about kids and fireworks and the amount of trouble they cause. Well last night they found out just how dangerous they can be. While I would never wish ill on anyone, I cannot help but feel that these idiots deserved it. Once again, some of the local kids were throwing fireworks about in the street, only this time one of the big banger types must have blown back at them. We heard the*bang* just outside in the road and within a couple of moments the sound of a siren as an ambulance came racing down the road. One of the kids was taken into the ambulance while a couple of others were questioned as the Police turned up. It turns out that the boy in the ambulance has suffered severe burns to his leg and one of his friends has superficial burns to his foot. These are not little kids, one of them is 14 and the others are around 10-12 years old. Plenty old enough to know better but now they have paid the price for their stupidity. Every year the emergency services are called out to accidents caused by kids messing around with fireworks in the street, it costs them time and money each time they are called out, yet incidents are increasing. Do you think it is time for some really serious legislation preventing or seriously restricting the public sale of fireworks?

definetly.there was a kid about 30 years back two streets up from me who blew his hand off playing with M-80 fireworks. technically, where i live they're illegal.but somehow they still get hold of them.probably people visiting other states where they're not.

There have been gangs of older teenagers in the street where I live throwing fireworks at each other recently. So far there don't seem to have been any injuries but it would serve them right if there were. There are restrictions on the sale of fireworks but I don't think they are inforced much (if at all) and I think lots of the local shopkeepers ignore the rules and sell them to anyone with money.

Very true hun, most of the shops around here are selling fireworks to anyone, not questioning ages at all. There have been more going off around here this afternoon again, and I have no doubt it will go on for a few hours yet.

I expect I can look forward to more of this when I get home today - especially as it's getting darker earlier now.

It just will not sink into my Head why Parents are letting them do this and even allowing them to have the Fireworks My Kids where never allowed them Even now when my Son sets them of on Bonfire Night it scares me and he 23 and very careful to But you know as well as I do it will not teach the rest of the Kids a lesson they will think oh that will not happen to me

Thanks Gabs, yup I wonder sometimes too. The local kids seem to have plenty of money to spend on fireworks, where do they get the cash?

The city I live in has a law against the selling and using of fireworks. But our neighboring cities do sell fireworks. So unless there is a cop standing at the border of our city, people can and do bring in fireworks.I am afraid that a kid or parent will have to die before all cities ban fireworks.

I think you are probably right hun, and it will take a fatality before this gets taken seriously.

Fireworks at Epcot - Fireworks done by the pros at Epcot last week
In NY they have been illegal for years, as a kid, I remember running down to the gas station to buy them (real safe place to sell explosives - a gas station). Then when I was older, and lived elsewhere, I would buy a batch and bring them to my friends in NY,Now I can just run to a grocery store in Connecticut and buy some if I want. Boys 10-14 years old are kids and worse they have hormones, making them even more irrational then the 8 year olds. Unless fireworks are illegal in every state...legislation will not do any good.

Way back when I was a kid fireworks were sold to adults only. Here in the UK we have the legislation but it doesn't seem to be taken seriously by the kids and the shop owners.

they should stop mucking about with fireworks as they are dangerous and can burn. hopefully they will learn their lesson. fireworks are meant for over 18s and it baffles me as to how young teenagers get hold of them. the government should do more to prevent this and hopefully they will

There was a report that a lot of the fireworks here now are illegally imported from China and are very dangerous. How soon before someone gets killed by these things, I wonder.

I seriously hate fireworks! The noise from fireworks at this time of year in my neihgbourhood drives me absolutely potty! What with Guy Fawkes coming up and Diwali, the whole of October and start of November, one doesn't know from one minute to the next when the noisy things are going to be going off and they are going on well into the early hours of the morning. I think they should definitely not be sold to the public. They are dangerous and just one injury to anyone, whether child or adult, is one too many as far as I'm concerned!

My partner and I were shopping over the weekend and saw some fireworks on sale that reminded me of bombs - they were huge great things the size of a big tin of sweets. These things must be so dangerous yet they are on sale over the counter to anyone with the cash. I just wonder why nothing is done to enforce legislation

I agree that there should be some kind of laws about this but my other question would be where are the parents during all this and why are they not watching their kids? I knew a kid years ago that lost his finger playing with these things. We were never allowed to play with anything more than sparkers when we were growing up. **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

We've got some here in the States and it still doesn't help much. City's outlaw them, but they drive out to the city lines & get them. It seems every few years we hear about a firework factory blowing up, but there's always another one to blow up a few yrs later.... I'm telling you, some people just have to be blown up to learn....

I am from Guangzhou, China. Here it doesn't allow to play the fireworks some years ago because it is somewhat dangerous. It is harmful for children because they play it without any cautions. And it can create fires. This is why it is already prohibited to play it here. It is also illegal to sell the fireworks.

Well, there ARE current restrictions on the sale of fireworks, but no one seems to take them very seriously - I mean, my thirteen year old cousin was able to buy some, from the shop on my estate, no questions asked... The situation here (London) is definetly out of hand, though - I mean, back when I was in an all girls' secondary school, the boys' school opposite ours used to wait until our school was let out at home time, and throw fireworks at us - one girl had a lucky escape, a firework was shot directly at her, and it ended up blowing a HOLE in her school blazer, and missing her by about an inch, if that... I think it's about time some sort of penalty was enforced for anyone caught selling fireworks to minors, it doesn't seem to be taken seriously enough, if you ask me.

Too right, the current legislation seems to be blatently ignored around here, with shops openly selling fireworks to anyone regardless.
