Hotel Beds

This discussion is for those who travel. Do you sleep well when you are in a bed other than your own? Do you ever think about how well the bathrooms and carpets are cleaned in hotel rooms? What about the beds...ever wonder if the sheets are really changed between hotel/motel guests? Many times we stay for multiple nights when we go to conferences and conventions. I have watched the hospitality staff clean bathrooms. Some do a really thorough job and others just swipe at the facilities. Any hotel staff out there that might want to comment? I worked at my parent's hotel when I was growing up. I was taught how to properly clean a bathroom, sanitize the mattress with lysol before putting on clean linen etc... Do they do those things anymore?

It really makes you wonder doesn't it. I worked myself at a hotel. I have stayed at a few with my family like when we went on vactions when I was younger. I know the hotel that I worked for called The Moorings did a really good clean of each room to get the bathrooms, floor, and also the sheets changed. I didn't work there long. I was also working at Walmart and I had a arugment with the lady that was in charged so I quit working there and just stayed working at Walmart in the shoe department.

That is quite a lot of work. I only did it on weekends but it became to much to me doing that and also working at Walmart. I understand why now.

My hubby worked in the hardware department at Walmart for almost 2 years while he was in college. For all the bad publicity, they were good to us, both corporate and his store. When my daughter was in the hospital with viral pnuemonia, the corporate office even called to check on her, and sent us a gift card to make sure we had money to eat on.

I worked in a hotel in high school, that my parents managed. We would wash sheets every day if someone had slept on them, even if the guests were staying another night...and then once a month we would wash the bedspreads, one hall a week would get clean bedspreads every Friday.

I usually sleep quite well in a guest house or hotel bed. I agree that standards vary considerably. I have seen clean facilities and I have dirty looking facilities. It is all to do with the cleaners efforts. When I was in Indonesia I stayed in a place. The room had twin beds and a stable like door. I sat down on on of the beds. There was a notice written in chalk on the wall. "Do not stay here. These beds have bed bugs and flees. Check out now."Oh my! I decided to go to reception and mention this. It was too late to find alternative accommodation. So I changed rooms. It had a double bed and a single bed. Tired I put all the plastic bags from my back pack on the floor. Getting into to not so clean looking bedding was horrible. That night I heard something run over my plastic bags. Rats? The next morning I asked other travelers for some help choosing a better palce to stay. I moved to stay at a friendly and clean guest house.

I am always worried about the beds..so much so that I usually sleep atop the bedspread.. Especially since many times when you pull the bedspread down..the bed looks like it was slept in and not changed..Yuck!

I am right the opposite. I usually throw the bedspread off, because I doubt those are changed often. If the sheets looked like they're slept in, i will call the front desk and tell them that they need to come up and change them right now and then stand in front of them while they do it. A threat to the health department usually gets you clean sheets.

With the recent outbreak of bedbugs, I don't think I would feel very comfortable in another bed. I always take a can of Lysol spray to spray everything before using. It may not get the job done but it makes me feel better about using the facilities and the bed. But I will not use the pillows, I bring my own. I don't trust the maids to clean everything, after all they are doing hard work for little pay and are pushed to do more every day.

I always try to watch the housekeeping staff clean a room. If I am not satisfied with the cleaning processes, it will be the last time I stay at that hotel, and will tell the management so when I check out. I did asked to be moved to another hotel when I went into a room and the toilet wasn't cleaned...

I think to be clean is no the kind of need or obligation for people. For example I am kinda untidy in my room and really don't care about this stuffs. Maybe it's our nature males :-) I think it is the result of my being arisen in a family full of girls. They were cleaning everything and doing everythig.I ever did actually do the same stuff and now don't want to.But I do tidy up sometimes when I fell like to. Hotels .I think all of them do the cleaning,at least their staff does. But it really depends on their quick controls over their staffs.

this is true. I would love to say shame on your sisters and mother for not teaching you to do these things for yourself! I taught my son how to sweep, mop, vaccuum, do the dishes, the laundry, clean bathrooms and countertops...He can keep a better house than his sisters can in most instances.

Good subject, personally i find it depends on what hotel your using. Many budget ones you have to "remind" room service theyre supposed to clean the rooms daily and if your not there its guaranteed to be a quick sweep through. Sheets vary from hotel to hotel.Worst sheets I had were in Florida at a well known chain. I was bitten by fleas from that room and no i wont be using them again.

oh that is bad. I was at a big chain in Texas while we were traveling a couple of years ago and crawled up onto the bed to sit and work on my laptop....and found myself sitting in ants. Someone had spilled something on the comforter, and it had been left on the bed, and was covered in ants.

We took a group of youth on a trip to the Temple one time. When we arrived at the motel. It was dirty. It had papercups and trash on the dresser and the table. I called the desk and they gave us another room but I still wondered just how clean the new room was. I have acturally considered making a sleeping bag from sheets to put on the motel beds to be sure it is clean. LOL

oh that's just disgusting! I can't believe they didn't upgrade you or offer you free dinner or something. i think I would be throwing a not so preacher's wife hissy fit! lol I just don't believe that the businesses really have the customers at heart anymore.

I just returned from a 10 day trip. I tossed and turned and woke up many times during the night. I slept terrible. This past trip, we stayed in a military facility which was very clean and new and nice. Then we went to Disney, where the carpets were damp from just being cleaned. Personally, I wonder how often the bedspreads are changed when you travel. I think it should be done between each guest..but I don't think that happens.

Not usually. The hotel where I worked, changed and washed the bedspreads once a week. More often if they were soiled or something was spilled on them. I probably think they should have been done more often now that i'm a mother and think about germs more often.

Yes I can sleep perfectly in an hotel bed. I just have to be tired and ready to sleep. Come to think of it when I'm tired and sleepy I am able to sleep anywhere LOL As for the cleanliness you mention I don't really think about it. I would like to think that things are done properly and with care and prefer to trust that it is so. But if they don't I prefer not to think about it, really.

This is true. I too can sleep just about anywhere when I'm tired...kind of like today! We traveled 3 hours Monday, spent the night at the college where my daughter is going to go next year, and then drove the three hours back...only we kept having to stop because my mom was sick, so it took 7 hours to get home.

i cannot sleep much if that is not my usual bed and especiall if it is a hotel bed. yes of course, i think about the sanitary condition of the hotel everytime. with the free towels, matress and other things given to me in the hotel i dont use it that much unless it is necessary. iheard most commoners here in our place just use the towel given to wipe their feet after they wash it. that's all they dont use it all over their body aside from there feet. so i dont really use the hotel towel much.

that's interesting. I am picky about towels, and if they don't smell clean, I will call the desk and ask for another one, and will tell them that they smell musty, or dirty. I'm not scared at all. I always take my own washcloths though. Just a personal preference.

No way i cannot sleep comfortably on a hotel bed, haha. There always too hard.Ive worked at a hotel here and yes there are some who do too fast of a job because they have alot ahead of them to clean and do not take the time to thorouly it.We clean the flush, sink, faucets, window sills, windows, mirrors, counters, dust the head boards, inside the dresser drawers, lamp shades, vaccuum, set out clean towels, soap, glasses, toilet paper, new sheets, spraying the bed(s)down with discinfectent,so much more, haha.Whats really not funny is when you go into a bathroom and someone forgot to flush the flush after #2,YUCK!Its usually younger ones who want to get done fast and miss alot of stuff.I am not paid by the room, only by the hour, sometimes we can do 2-3 rooms in an hour or maybe 1 room,it depends how much stuff was left behind like takeouts and if things were moved and i had to do laundry also, washing the linens, towels and folding them a certain way to get that perfect crease on the sheets. Its not a job for the people who just want a quiet alone job,its very hard work doing this and running around, haha:):)Have a nice day,carpenter5:):)

it is hard work! Well, it is if it's done right anyway. I gues any job can be done quickly and easily if you half do it. That is just not my style. I worked at my parent's hotel, and then also worked at a camp on year. Try cleaning up after a bunch of kids week after week.

My sisters work in the toursim industry in hotels across Canada, and based on what they have told me, the bare essentials are done to keep hotels clean which means, so they are not very clean at all! It makes me want to bring my own sleeping bag and camp out on the floor!

We have begun to keep a log of which hotels are clean and which ones aren't when we are traveling. Then if we have to go back to that city, we don't stay at the same hotel if it get "low marks" so to speak. Also, hotels.com can be helpful if someone else has had a bad experience.

I travel alot. I inspect the hotel website carefully. I make sure they have room pictures and that they look new and a bit upscale. I hate sleeping in bad beds even worse being in a dirty hotel room. I will pay more just to stay in a place I feel comfortable. Then I go and look at the reviews I pay special attention to the comfy bed comments.

We travel for work, and sometimes we don't get to choose where we stay. Fortunately, my hubby's travel person at his office is really conscious of things like that. There's only been once that our hotel was kind of lacking. And that was at his old job.

I generally find it difficult to sleep in a different bed. If the trip has included long distance travel, I'll usually be able to sleep the first night just out of exhaustion, but then on subsequent nights, I'm not able to sleep. Hotel's have a sort of unnatural feel to them. There's either too little or too much noise, and it just feels strange to sleep in a bed, knowing that countless other people have been in it before you.

I think I have more trouble sleeping at camp than at hotels. When we take kids to youth camp, you know that kids are not clean to begin with, and you just don't know who has slept in that bed or stepped into that shower before you.

nice discussion. :-) i have travelled a lot around our country and was able to stay in different hotels and pension houses of different grades. i have slept in so many beds. but what i notice is that i sleep late in hotels and wake up early, which is quite unsual for me. i dont know if it is the bed, or because the TV is in the room and i watch a lot of TV, which i dont usually do when i am at home and i am sort of "hungry" for shows. hehehe anyway, i think it is staying in a strange room that makes us queasy about sleeping in hotels...:-)

There have been a couple of times that I've had to stay in a hotel by myself. That's when i really don't sleep well. I am usually ok if Mike and/or the kids are with me. I don't like to stay by myself at any time....even at home.

Hotel or friend's or even family - I never sleep good in a strange bed but will admit hotels are the worst of all. I spend the entire time wondering how well it was cleaned what 'critters' might have been left behind by previous guests and things like that.

Did you see the post at the end from the man with the fleas. That makes me nervous. I remember one time I was staying at my mother's and I kept hearing something rustling under the bed. I reached up and turned a lamp on...and a mouse ran across the bedroom. I went crazy! I don't do creatures.

For some years we, my wife and me, have travelled on holidays going to campings and sleeping in a tent, so hotel beds are not a problem for us. Just once, when we were in Sweden we had some troubles with the bed, which was a sort of narrow fouton (and it was a bed intended for two people), but it was a very luxury and fashonable hotel, where everything was 'a la page'. The problem was indeed with our one size (XXL) and not in the hotel's bed... good bye

that would be bad for us. My husband is several inches over six feet tall. A futon bed just wouldn't work for him at all...even if I weren't with him. Can't imagine what it would be like for the two of us. I would love to go to Sweden someday though!
