The Lunch Group or the Simple IncomeTax

With the politicians blasting President Bush's Tax cuts and not wanting to make them permanent. Whild others are talking about making the rich pay their fair share and just raise the tax on the rich, I thought this simple story was inorder.
This is a story that I heard on the radio about 10 men who had dinner and paid for it in the same manner as you would pay your income tax. A Professor of Economics from the University of Georgia created this to help explain the Income Tax and how cutting taxes works.
It seemed that 10 men decided to have a business lunch once a week. They always met in the same restaurant and the bill was always, $100.00, for all 10 men. If each man was responsible for his share of the bill that would be, $10.00, each. The men decided to divide the bill based upon their ability to pay. Using an agreed upon formula the following payment arraignment was worked out based upon income.
Men 1-4 who made the least amount of money paid nothing.
Man 5 paid $ 1.00
Man 6 paid $ 3.00
Man 7 paid $ 7.00
Man 8 paid $12.00
Man 9 paid $18.00
Man 10 paid $59.00
After several weeks the owner of the restaurant told the men that because they were such good customers he was reducing the bill by $20.00. Their delimina was how to divide up the, $20.00. If each person got the same amount then the first 4 men would be getting money back but they never paid anything for the dinners. After much discussion and no resolve the owner offered the following suggestion which they all agreed to.
Original Payment New Payment $ Amount Saved % Saved
Men 1-4 paid $ 0.00 $ 0.00 $0.00 0%
Man 5 paid $ 1.00 $ 0.00 $1.00 100%
Man 6 paid $ 3.00 $ 2.00 $1.00 33%
Man 7 paid $ 7.00 $ 5.00 $2.00 28%
Man 8 paid $12.00 $ 9.00 $3.00 25%
Man 9 paid $18.00 $14.00 $4.00 22%
Man 10 paid $59.00 $50.00 $9.00 15%
Once out side the men began to argue about the settlement. Man 5 said he only got, $1.00, while Man 10 received, $9.00. Men 1-4 were upset because the received nothing. They said that the cut only benefited the rich and the poor got nothing. They were upset so they beat up Man 10 and left him. The next week they met for lunch as usual except man 10 did not show up. When the new bill arrived the men discovered that between them they did not have enough money to pay even half of the bill.
In this story we see a simplified version of the Federal Income Tax. According to an article in the "New York Times" 80% of the taxes are paid by 20% of the people highest income people. Any time you have a tax cut the people who pay taxes are going to get the money. The next time you hear of a tax cut and the media tells you that the wealthy are getting all the money, remember they are paying the taxes.
Lets hope the #10 don't decide someday not to show up for dinner. We would be lost without them.

Let's expand your analogy to include thousands of similar groups of men going to lunch all over the world.
What actually is going on today is that the number #10's are leaving the groups too stupid to appreciate what they do and joining the groups that do.
This is typified by large corporations moving off shore, the rich moving their money out of the country, and etc.

There are sports people and entertainers are taking up legal residence in one state and live in another state. For example Conn. has a personal property tax on all your possitions but no income tax. Then they live in another state that has a high income tax but low property taxes. They pay a small aomunt on their Conn property and no Income Tax in the state where they live and pay the small property tax.
You are right about why companies leave the US because of the high tax and regulation

The Democrats only have 2 reasons to want to repeal the tax cuts... They would rather cough up a lung than admit Prs. Bush was right, and The Tax Cuts worked. 2 things the mindlessly lame DNC and incompetent Congressional leadership just can't deal with.

We are enjoying economic growth because of the tax cuts. People will work more if they make more money - why should someone work to make another $10,000.00 if they are going to tax it at 65%. Would you work for 1/3 of your pay. Most people would not. I once heard a story that Ronald Reagan only made 5 movies a year because if he made more than that he would lost most of his pay in taxes and with 5 movies he could enjoy his lofe style and spend time doing what he wanted to do. I had a friend who decided to work a second job to help pay some bills and found that he had to pay most of his extra job money for taxes because he moved two tax brackets.

Great story bob! I have to say it really made me look at the tax system a little differently. My hubby and I pay a decent amount of taxes, but it's not the Federal government that's killing us (although they're helping) it's the local government, in the form of property taxes. We paid $4200 last year in property tax. Then there was a 1% sales tax increase making our sales tax almost 9% (no biggie on that one.) But the kicker was when the county "reassessed" my property value after the August flood, where my house sustained over $10,000 worth of damage and they hiked the value of my house way up and it looks like we will see another $1000 plus increase in our property taxes next year. There is no way my house is worth more money, the damage isn't even 100% fixed yet. So now I get to start the battle to have them come back and have them look again. The part that really gets me is that FEMA was here the day they were assessing my property.

Some people haveways to fight the high taxes. I live in WI and we have a 5.5% sales tax on clothing. When we did school shopping for our children we used to drive to MN (50 miles away) and shop for clothes (no sales tax on clothes) and fill up with gas (a $0.15 to $0.25 per gal savings). I find my self doing more shopping on line because of no sales tax and many will ship free. I would like to see someone propose cutting spending rather than raising taxes to balance the budget.
