My computer got sick:(

My computer got sick so I had to perform surgery. * I had to open it's shell and dust out dust bunnies, (regular business in the high desert so that's no biggie) then reload both of my operating systems. Now that is a major pain in the binaries. * I've two operating systems, and installed a second hard drive so that is a major affair. The fact that Windows forces you to reboot every other update and driver install drags on the chore. * Linux is easier to install unless you want to access an NTFS Windows. Than the swap partition creation gets INTERESTING. * Nonetheless, its been a heck of a past few days.

At work, I have sometimes to perform surgeries on the customers compures. As time is money there, we prefer not to install the OS from the scratch, as this requires loading a lot of additional software and compatibilities issues migt arise. We reinstall the pre-shipment status of the Hard Drives from the drive image saved (Norton Ghost). It takes about 40 minutes, and no traces of the customer experiments and failures left. Ghost is just one of the drive imaging solutions on the market, but it is, probably, the best so far.

I've always had problems with Norton software. I'm glad you've had no problems with it.

I don't know about Norton Ghost. I hate Norton Antivirus with a passion cuz it's full of bloat (unneccisary software) bundled with it. Bloat makes stuff crashy.

You are right, Norton Ghost does not guarantee the image transfer to the hard drive for 100%, as if the DVD has scratches, the image tranfer to the Hard Drive might be compromised. The oldest verions were really sensitive to everything, the newest we use for customer systems backup, is much more stable. I also tried other similar programs, both free and not, and failed to locate any better utility.

I had to learn to pay "doctor" cuz I couldn't afford the $150 per hour plus parts charged at the shops. The parts themselves are surprisingly affordable. It forced me to educate myself.

Thank you for the BR, and I hope that you got your computer fix and back up and running great. I did learn that if you have an AOL account that you can download their Security edition and the security monitor and the computer check-up, it is the very best thing I have found and it will block out anything that is trying to crawl into your computer and let you know what it is, I just love it. If you try it though you have to take out what ever other kinds of security things you have and you will be protected all the way around. Good Luck. Hugs!

I'm not a big fan of AOL. I know people who've had less than wonderful experiences. But I won't pass AOL judgment. For viruses I took the Linux route, but that is a very steep learning curve and not for everyone. * I do have to let you know that AOL doesn't always keep it's software as up to date as it needs to as the hackers are getting craftier by the day. And in the case of the Zombies, you don't even know your infected and doing harm.

My neighboors computer just got sick last week... Both my neighboors actually, but one was selfinflicted :D First one nearly killed her computer by never cleaning it, and finally asked me to help her get it in better shape... takes ages to both clean physically and software 8( Other neighboor tried to change hardware in it without knowing what was what and how it all works together, so he nearly fried his graphicscard. He finally came running in when the graphicscard gave a big cloud of smoke in annoyance over having a cable set on incorrectly :D

Computers are so demanding these days. In most cases, users are to blame, but even with maximum care and skill, they do break down. Just like real people.

The more complicated the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain, right?

It is very much usual for the Computers to be give some treatment regularly, even though they are good. This is just to maintain their health. But when they are sick, they definitely need some fix.

Agreed. Removing bloatware helps. Freewarefiles.com is a good source of trim software with out bloat. Most purchased software comes with stuff that slows it down.
