I have in the past, and would do so again if the game interested me enough. Most often I don't play for a great period of time though. Mainly I do or did so because I enjoied playing the game. It's more or less be the same concept as subscribing to a magazine who's informative content isn't going to improve your life(Entertainment Weekly or the like), but you enjoy reading it anyway. Or renting a movie or going to the theater to see a movie. Do you need these things, or the internet for that matter? No, not really, but a lot have them anyways. Why? Because it's a hobby, or a distraction to escape into when real life is otherwise boring at the time.

I use to play warcraft and it was some very fun stuff. For the most part I specialized in PVP (Player vs Player) and battlegroups. I met a lot of fun people on both sides of the factions. Sure some people don't see any logic in playing to pay, but its an expanding game and you get to interact with several thousands of people (potentially millions if you play enough servers). And paying for this is like paying for subscriptions to magazines or going to the golf course, or paying for once a month spoiler spa treatments, and more. Everyone's got their choice of poison.
