I used my last employer in New York as a reference for a new job here in Illinois. I thought I left on good terms, was an excellent worker (at least everyone there told me I was ) and was told, by my boss, that I would be sorely missed. She even said she would give me a great reference, should I need it. Well, my new company called her and she said she never heard of me!!! I am currently in unpaid training to be a School Bus Driver (signing bonus when actually hired). I can see why they need references, after all, I will be driving children to and from school.
I am shocked and appalled with my ex-boss' response when called for a reference! I sent her an email when I got home from training today. I informed her all she had to do was check her employee files ( which, by law, she should keep for 3 years) and she would have found me. I have W2's from my earnings there. I gave her a good piece of my mind and did it without even cussing!! :P
My partner says I can and should take legal action against her for this lack of professionalism and outright dishonesty and lying!! I know she lied because we have corresponded via email within the past few years.
What do you think? Anybody got any advice for me on this legal action I can take?

I think i would file some kind of charges against her. Maybe with a labor board or something like that. It really is illegal that she told your new boss she never heard of you! I can't imagine what she was thinking. Don't let her get away with that...I sure wouldn't.
