Why are people mean?

I have never understood why people go out of their way to be mean. What does it accomplish in the long run? What is the point? For example, my brother-in-law's girlfriend has decided to go out of her way to be inconsiderate when it comes to communicating with me. I made a mistake a few months ago that I have apologized for and it did not involve her. Well she decided to judge me on this, so her and two other people whom I thought were friends have cast me aside. I honestly now know they are not people I need in my life anymore. I am only going to have to see her on a trip over Xmas because the family is going and she is going to be there too. Bleh! I plan on keeping my distance and remaining polite, but I do not have to like her!

There are ppl like this in everyone's life. I have one but I won't say who. Anyways, the best thing you can do is to just stay away from the person and be thankful she showed you the true light of the two other ppl that you thought were friends. **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

I have found that if people are mean to you it is usually because they are jealous and have a low opinion of themselves. This is their problem not yours. I treat people how I would like to be treated.

Yea, often its true. Its like people with low self esteem try to drag others down to their level instead of treating themselves better.

There are a few girls at my work that are just mean for the fun of it. I see no reason to be mean or rude, just to look tough, because I think that is the only reason they are like that. They don't intimidate me, and I don't suggest they try because it won't work. One told me she had ran off two employees, just because she didn't like them. I thought to myself, why in the world be like that? What can she possibly get out of being such a hateful b*tch? It just makes her very unpopular at work. Wouldn't she rather have friends instead of enemies?

I would have to agree with you here. I think some people are mean because they have been hurt so much in life that they feel they need to inflict that pain on others. Sometimes I think it is a self esteem issue too.

Because they are satisfied with mean benefits.

Because their lives are so boring and utterly miserable they have to take pride in making others around them miserable as well. Bitterness is what grows inside them, and when they are old they will be alone and isolated! So dont hate her, Just sit back and enjoy it as it happens to her ;)

For some reason they get some sort of self satisfaction out of hurting others. I would think it's because they use it as a way to control others or situations. They think when they are mean and hurt you they are in control. You are right...you don't have to like her and maybe if you just ignore her things might turn around!
