British English VS. American English

I'm not a native English speaker. I started learning English from primary school. At that time, British English(I mean the pronunciation or the accent)was prevailing. Most of the English listening materials were read in BE. However,apparently American English(accent)is much more popular among the english learners in my country now. So i feel a little bit strange when I talk to somebody who speak American English. What do you think or feel when you hear someone speak in BE or AE? which one do you prefer, British Accent or American Accent?
