I understand the NYY position in their offer but I understand why Torre didn't take it. But like I said to my husband earlier after we listened to the press conference on the radio - is it really his fault they haven't been to the World Series? He may have made some poor judgment calls but it's not his fault if Jeter or Rodriguez or any of them go into a slump and can't hit the ball or a homerun, etc. Baseball although it's a "team" can sometimes be a one player sport when you are up at bat or a pitcher. I like Torre and am sad to see him go.

No, it's not Torre's fault. I think the better way to judge a manager is the regular season, which is 162 games - not the postseason, which for the Yankees was only 4 games. The Yankees were 6-0 against the Indians in the regular season. And in the regular season, the Yankees had the best record in baseball in the second half of the season. For a manager to be able to turn a team around from the awful start that they had - that's saying something. If you get your team to enough postseasons, they're bound to win in some of them. It's unrealistic to expect Joe Torre to singlehandedly cause the Yankees to win the world series every year. The team has just been doing poorly in the first round in the last few years. It happens. The Yankees have at least made it to the postseason for every one of the 13 consecutive years that Torre has been the manager, winning 6 AL titles. Apparently the Yankees organization thought that wasn't enough...

Im a huge Yankee fan and I think the reason the Yankee's havent been to the world series is nothing but pure cockiness... The Yankees have been such a good team for so long they lost sight of the fact that it takes alot of talent and hard work to get to the world series, not just showing up. I think the Yankee's have lost their love for the game and now just love the money... Maybe next year tho!!:)

I don't understand the Yankees position, not at all. The NY Yankee's problem is that the owner not longer controls the team, his son's do and they've surronded themselves w/ businessmen who are only concerned about the bottom line. Yes, they will spend money to field a competitive team, but the decisions are being made by business men not baseball men. They made an offer that they knew would insult Torre and he would turn it down... it's a very sad day... amny of the current ballplayers have only played under Torre and now he's gone. Makes you wonder what impact this has on re-signing ARod and Mariano Riveria and Jorge Posada. Don Mattingly has stated he IS NOT ready to take over as the full-time manager, I hope they don't dump this mess in his lap and say fill Torre's shoes (cause Mattingly may be the only name in the organization that could do so) I knew it would happen , but it's sad.

The only reason I said I saw their point was simply for the fact that Joe said for all these years (even pre-Yankees) he got paid for his performance for the previous year so since "management" didn't feel he performed very well - they attempted to reduce his salary. I'm not saying I agree with it but I know why they did it. Why would they offer him more money when his hasn't brought them to a World Series in years. I'm a die hard Yankees fan and I love Joe Torre and I agree with you about who is and isn't making the decisions here. My eyes actually got a little watery listening to him saying that some of the guys he's been with for years and then some of them for just a little time and he's so close to them. It's sad and unfortunate. I hope they realize what they've done and don't make this Mattingly's problem.

I don't think it is really Torre's fault that they didn't make it to the World Series. I think it is ridiculous that they as much as fired them. He turned the Yankees into a real contender year after year, and he should have been given another chance. It is going to be interesting to see what happens next year without Torre or Alex Rodriquez (because I don't think he will stay in NY).

I don't see how Torre can be blamed for not getting the team to the World Series. He made it several times, and when he didn't he at least made the playoffs, so I'd say he did his job. Teams have ups and downs, and that's just a fact of life. As I used to tell my kids when they played sports, no one player wins or loses a game, and neither does the coach, unless he's really inept. Torre has proven that is not the case, and blaming him for the team's down years is just wrong. It's the team as a whole that didn't do the things they needed to do to win, not just one person.

no its not his fault at all. the other teams in the league have just gotten better. it happens all the time. no one can be on top all the time. i think torre is a great coach and coached his players very well in a lot of games. there is no doubt that he will do great in LA.

Being a huge Yankee fan and Joe Torre fan I am very sad also to see him leave to LA. I don't think it's his fault they didn't make it to the World Series, let along past the Divisional series the past few years. You are right that it's the players that go into slumps and that does not reflect on the manager. One thing to knock Joe, last year during the series against Clevelend he should have talked to the umps more about delaying the game when all the bugs were surrounding the mound
