Writing About Nothing.

Have you ever tried to write something and found that there is a block in your brain? I'm sure it happens to every writer at some point. When I was in 5th grade, we had regular writing exercises to do. If we couldn't find something to write about, we were told to write about nothing. No joke. So, I few months back, I gave it a go. To my surprise, this piece ended up being quite long, several pages in fact. When I read over it, I found that my nothing was actually something. Just by thinking of the word and what I thought it meant, I had ended up with a brilliant, if not rough, piece of work. If you find yourself in the same situation, give it a go. You might be pleasantly surprised!

This has also definitely happened to me...As for writing about nothing--I do remember writing a poem about this a few years back and it came up pretty good--will definitely post it here when I find it... and I do agree with you that giving a go at things will definitely result into something--better than just doing nothing about it, right ;)

You definitely are on the right track, writing everyday! I want to do that as well, but I can be one hell of a procrastinator soemtimes, it's embarrassing!! As for writing about nothing, yup--it really is amazing how interesting that topic can be and the results it can yield when you write about it! Btw, here's the poem that I was telling you about: (written way back in 2000) Nothing How can something come out from nothing, when nothing can come from nothing? So nothing isn't nothing when it results into something, because by then, it would've been something and not nothing, since something must always result from another thing, but never from nothing. Because nothing is not anything and something is anything; Nothing can never be something and something can never be nothing. So what is this business of something coming from nothing? Nothing...because there exists no such thing. Hehe, writing that made me a bit confused--but I think it turned out pretty well--what do you think? ;)

Ah, the grand procrastinator. Yep guilty here too! I should be working on my articles or folding washing, but I am here instead LOL. and great poem. You need to post it on Helium under poetry, and let it make you money! lol. It is fabulous! Well done. And nothing really is something. Gosh, just look at the responses I have had since starting nothing! lol.

So I'm not the only one who can write about nothing. LOL. I try to write every day, even just a quick diary entry, and the days when I got nothing, I write nothing! It ends up being quite funny some time.

Hi, You are so right there! I have never thought it this way but thinking this way does make sense. Many a times I write raher I scribble whatever comes to my mind without any languagae, grammar, syntax. All kind of fall out of places yet I find it good on letting go. Whenever, I feel sad and down, which is quite often these days, I write my mind and thoughts. It kinda helps. However, I am not much of a poet, so I never came up with great literary excellent pieces. But who knows, never say never again! lol..

Sorry you are having a rough time. Keep writing it out. Write down a list of the feelings you have and then see where it goes. As for poetry? Well, what is a poem any way? These days lots of things are considered poems, and not all of them rhyme!

Oh yes, I lived this situation about one year ago. I tried to write some poems but they were not beautiful because I didn't write my real feelings. I wanted to let my girlfriend, but I didn't write about this and I don't know why, maybe because I was confused. However, when I have let her the confusion is gone away and I wrote better poems.

Inspirations strike from the strangest places. Writer's block can be a real pain in the backside. I know, I have it at the moment with 2 articles I'm writing. Hhhhmmmm, they need rewrites and gotta be a bit careful with the subject.

Interestingly enough, we were always given journals to write in, and we had to have so many of them. We were told if we couldn't think of anything good enough to write about, we should just put a bunch of different sentences down onto the paper, and if they weren't really that related, then whatever, as long as you were getting practice writing and what not. However, I found that writing about nothing, usually turned out several good pieces, and of course, some pretty random pieces that really didn't make much sense. But hey, that's what happens when you write about nothing.

So there is no such thing as nothing as nothing always turns into something! lol. True here too. I also find that just taking one word and writing a list on how I relate to the word helps too. Writing doesn't have to be perfect, as long as it is theraputic! lol. Certainly is here!

I have not written about nothing. I never had writers block, besides there is nothing I could do about it and nothing I can say about nothing, which leaves a whole blank of nothingness in my mind. Since there is nothing in my head, why do I have this skull? If I truly had nothing, then my head would be a balloon and every time I breathe out, my head would shrink, and if I breathed in, but not too much or it would pop, my head would blow up like a balloon. Splat! See there's nothing to that. :)

And so you just proved my point! lol. Nothing really is something after all. You are very clever with your writing. Thanks for your response.

I often want to write something but find that there is a block in my brain, just like what you say.Maybe you are a writer,so you can feel what you want to write.some people want to write anything ,when they take their pens they forget what they will write in their paper.Like me,when I cry, many feeling burst into my hands, but while I want to write them down on my diary,I suddenly don't konw what I will remember.A few weeks ago,my sister required me to write something about her.Until now, the paper is still blank as I don't konw how to write it.You may find something strange.Yes.If I only think what to write, many words will pour into my brain. Are you in the same situation ever before?

Yep. It does happen all the time. When I try to blog about my day, suddenly all I can think of is the good things and not the ones that I want to grumble about! lol. Same with writing letters. I just never know what to say or how much to say. But, if I am desperate to write, and can't find something to write about, I always do my nothing writing! lol.

I feel that my mind is sometimes blank, especially when I get pressured. Sometimes I feel I want to right but when I am already infront of my PC or holiding a pen, then that feeling suddenly disappears and it annoys me many times. I guess it's easy if we just right on random thoughts, when no pressure nor subject to think about. Just like the saying goes, 'making something out of nothing.' =)

When that happens, write about it. You have the feelings right at that point and should use them. Sounds silly, but a lot of writers do it. I am lucky enough to have been blessed with a gift for writing from a young age, but there are still days when I can't get the words flowing. When it happens, I write about how I get frustrated and where I want my writing to go and it usually ends up getting my focus back.

I had writer's block for five years after someone stole my poetry. This was in High School. I mostly do poems and short stories, but I don't do much anymore. Mylot is the only place I have ever gotten paid for my writing.

I'm sorry someone stole your work. I had a friend try and do the same, and hand it in as her assignment. Smart me had copies of drafts everywhere, and I always put the date on them. She got into trouble, and I got the A+. There are other sites out there that pay for articles. Helium.com is one of them. You don't earn a lot, but the more you write, and better ranked your articles are, higher the earnings. In 3 months, I have submitted 5 articles and earnt 37 cents. Yeah, small, but some articles do better than others. Go and check it out. My pen name there is same as here, if you would like to see examples of the work. There are many areas of writing through this site, and it is up to you what you write and where you post it. Writers block hit here at the moment too. Got 2 articles to rewrite and all I can think of is nothing! lol.

That happen to me when I was in school I would have to come up with something but had no ideas so I just make it up as I go. Right now I try to think an idea of a story for my movie but I couldn't think of anything. So I just kept putting it off. I have a basic idea for a story but no plot. Without a plot then I got no story. I want inspiration but haven't found one yet. I just hope I find inspiration or at least have an idea of what I am doing.

Sometimes it isn't about starting with a plot. If you start with profiling your characters and places, then the plot will follow. do some writing exercises. Write about nothing and see what comes out of it. write about your pen, your computer, why you can't find inspiration and see what you get out of it. Remember, you don't have to start writing at the beginning. You can write in sections and then work to get them flowing together. Good luck and I hope that inspiration strikes soon.

I often meet with such embrassed moments.Last week, our teacher asked us to write a person whomever you'd like.My roommates wrote at once, they described their father, mother, or teachers while I don't know what to write. Finally, my friend said jokingly what about "my god".Well, I chose that titile, and wrote 2 pieces of paper, but actually I didn't know what I wrote.

LOL. Not game to read it hey? Yeah, been times like that for me too. I just start writing different words and then see where they take me. Ok, so I can write any where any time, but I still hit the writers block all the time too. I go back to the nothing exercise and end up with pages of something! LOL. Hhhmmm. gotta be careful when I start Uni that I don't hand in nothing notes.

I sometimes end up with writers block, which is THE most annoying thing when I'm desperately trying to update one of my fanfics. My solution is carrying a notepad around a lot of the time, and then when an idea pops into my head or I am bored I just write it down, I find it greatly useful and means that when I have "nothing to do" I can just type up the stuff in my notepad.
