Do you celebrate Halloween? I know it seems that most people celebrate halloween, but do you think it's okay for christians to celebrate halloween? I read this article today http://www.bibleteacher.org/halloween.html I am not sure if it's okay for me to do this anymore. I really need to think about it. They make a big deal out of it at school. They are going to have dress up day at my child's school and he is so excited because he wants to wear a costume to school and they are also going on a field trip. I am going to let him participate but is there anything wrong with this. When I was smaller I use to go trick or treating but people at church started saying that it was wrong so we stopped. I'm starting to feel guilty.I don't let my children go trick a treating door to door for various reasons. My two year old is scared of everything that has to do with halloween. We can't pass anything in the store that looks scary without her holding on to me. She is terrified. I am going to keep her inside on halloween. Last year I allowed my son to go to the mall to the different stores to get candy. I did not see any harm in that, but this year I don't know if I'm going to do that. I would just rather buy a bag of candy and give it to them occasionally. They don't need all that candy. It's not good for the teeth and it makes them hyper.

If you feel it is OK to celebrate halloween, then what is wrong with it? As a Zen practitioner I try not to interfere with the beliefs of others as it is one of the precepts. And there is only one "law" I follow - Do unto others what you would have other do unto you. If me celebrating halloween hurt others, then I had better be prepared for it to hurt me back. As this is not the case with halloween, then if I am only bringing good fun to others, then it would be OK for me to celebrate it. I tend to learn from what my experience tells me, not other "authorities". It's OK for them to preach if that's what they feel the need to do, but it's OK for me listen or not listen. :-)

Please forgive me for posting this here, as I am not sure how to get this to derek_a otherwise. I would love to hear more about the Zen philosophy. Do you have suggestions on books or other material to start?

I would like to look at halloween just the same as those normal traditions held. Like Santa Claus for christmas, images and idols for church (in which I also feel is not right), and those other festivities held like Mardi Gras. I believe that these celebrations, like christmas and halloween are mostly aimed for children and those young at hearts. It is not meant to mislead others, but as a sort of having fun and enjoying the season..

Why do you feel it may not be okay to celebrate? Because its a Pagan holiday? So is Easter and Christmas..both are originally Pagan as well so do you celebrate them or no? If you arent comfortable with it then thats completely up to you of course but I would seriously consider WHY you arnet comfortable with it all of a sudden? What has REALLY changed other than reading that article from last yr to this yr? See what I'm getting at? Sure not having all the candy is very valid and I agree BUT its not like you'd let him have all that candy at once right....I mean you can still just put it up and only give him a pc once in a while ya know...Ppl tend to forget its the FUN of dressing up and trick or treating that the kids enjoy so much ya know...Getting to dress up and pretend you are something that on a daily basis you only get to dream about (like a superhero or princess etc) is exciting, creative and fun for the kids....

Halloween is not only a Pagan, but a satanic day. It is the celebration of all that is evil. I really don't think that God wants his children to celebrate evil. But, I do not judge others on this. To each his own. As a minister, my mother did not approve of it when I was a child. And I do not approve of it now. Usually on that day, I go with my sisters and their kids to church and they have little special things for the kids so that they don't feel left out. But, we don't have anything to do with that celebration.

I will not allow my children to dress like a ghost, witch,or a demon. They are not even interested in dressing like that. I don't want them to do anything that represents the devil or anything that is evil. My son really loves the Transformers. This year and for the past 2 weeks he has been asking me to buy him a Transformers costume so he can wear it to school on dress up day. I might buy the Transformers outfit to wear around the house or play in and to wear it to school. I can deal with spiderman, princess outfits and some cartoon characters.

We are going to have some fun activities at our church on halloween. My neighbor also invited us to her church because they are going to have some fun activities for the children. I told him about it and he said that he wants to go to church on halloween.

There are a lot of things that you can let your kids have fun with during halloween. Some of the kids at my church dress in costume. But, there are some families that will go all out with the creepy stuff. The Bible clearly says, "Come out from among them and be ye separate."

This article you read is the classic "Christian website saying everything on earth is evil." They seemed to inform those who read the first of it on what other religions believe, but then they went on to say how wrong and evil it is back up with scripture. It is best to learn these matters from a source that actually knows what it is talking about. The website article is condemning everyone who recognizes Halloween to hell. The article is written by religious fanatic nutcases who should be locked up in a mental hospital. Funny how they go back to Leviticus a lot of times, since that is the book of JEWISH LAW lol. They also pick and chose one or two verses here and there probably without even reading the whole chapter the scriptures are in.

My thought on Halloween is that it is no longer anything close to what it originated as, so I don't see why it is a problem for a Christian to celebrate Halloween. Today it is a day for fun. To be something different for awhile. There are so many different stories about how Halloween came about that we can't even be sure what it was originally meant to be. As long as you and your kids aren't out worshiping the devil I don't see a problem with it. This is one issue I have with the Christian community. There seems to be harm in everything and everywhere. The world is not out to get us. Everything we do can be looked at in a negative light if we want to search enough.

I'm planning on taking my son trick or treating this year, even though we are Christians. I understand that the root of Halloween isn't something that we should celebrate, but let's face it, most holidays now aren't even close to what they originally started as. I don't see anything wrong with letting my child get all dressed up and go get some candy from a few people. If you look into a lot of traditions that Christians do keep, you will find that some of them started as Pagan rituals as well. I don't think it makes a person a bad Christian just because they participate in some Halloween festivities. It's not like you have to practice witchcraft on Halloween to participate in the other stuff.

Nothing is wrong with Halloween other than the fact that like many other special days - including Christmas and Easter = Christian holidays - it's more commercial than anything else. MOst people don't even know the roots of Halloween to even make an opinion of how right or wrong it is. In any case, for most people it's just a days where they can dress up with costumes and have fun. And there's nothing wrong with it, more and more people need some time to just have fun. SO it has pagan roots.. and? So does the Christmas tree and I haven't heard the church saying it was wrong to have them. The trick or treating.. well , while I agree that things are certainly not as safe as they were before, it's still a big time for kids and - an interesting fact - it's not even about eating all the candy, but more the trick or treating itself. Some kids forget all about the candy in a day or two. ON the other hand, as long as and adult accompanies the kids while trick or treating and are aware of any special fears that the chid might have to be able to avoid a very scary kid,I don't see a problem. As for the candy itself, examining it after getting home and discarding any that look suspicious or just not good works fine. I used to keep it and send one or two - never more - with my kids in their lunch box for months after :) That said I am not exactly a Halloween person, just because I didn't grow up with that tradition. So sometimes I even forget all about it until it's too late. But I still don't see anything wrong about it and certainly like to make my own decisions on what is wrong or right. Halloween is not it - wrong I mean :)

Halloween has been celebrated in many ways throughout history and each person is free to participate to whatever level they are comfortable with...I read the article that was written at bibleteacher.org.... Being a Wiccan, I agree with many of the things that he wrote in that Samhain in one of our Sabbaths and it is a great time of celebration for us...we are not judgemental of others and do not feel a need to convert others to our religion..no matter what the time of year...we feel that each individual has the right to follow whatever path is chosen by them.... If it feels wrong to you, then I would say not to celebrate Halloween but I would pray about it and not allow another human to tell me what to believe...even in your religion there are many who "preach" untruths and you need to decide if what they are telling you is in fact for your spiritual well-being... Blessed be...

Theres nothing wrong with a halloween celebration for the kids. But as you say they probably don't need all the Candy. AS for the article, I read it all and couldn't get any sense out of it. If you set out to find a problem you can fine\d it anywhere. As for the witches, The Catholic church killed hundreds of thousands of good people during the Dark Ages because they were practicing witchcraft. Do you actually think this was Right? You can check this out very easily. Its been documented many times over. The Church is very Quiet about this, They know it was wrong but are not admitting it.

I celebrated Halloween when I was a kid and if I ever have kids they will do the same. I think it's absolutely ridiciulous that people think it's some "evil" holiday and forbid children who see so many other children having fun from having fun. Plus if you're the parent you can control how much candy they eat and go out with them to make sure they're safe and there's just so many things you can do to make it a good holiday. Plus, scary is part of what it's supposed to do. I just never quite understood why people don't like halloween or celebrate it. Same with people who get all offended when someone says Merry Christmas or Happy hanukah or even the more kosher Happy Holidays. It's just stupid to get so bent out of shape about that stuff.

I am extremely glad you read that article. I myself am a Christian. I would never let my children go trick-or-treating. It is a Pagan/Satanic holiday. I suggest you saty at home or go to church that day. Read a small part of the Bible. But most importantly, tell your children why Halloween is bad. Try to get your church to have a day to talk about the evils of Halloween. Hope this helps. Sincerely, Eddy

They are only kids once and tricker treating is alot of fun as long as your not worshipping satan and sacrificing small innocent animals I don't see anything wrong with it. You can make it a fun happy time for your littlest one alot of churches around here have a Harvest Celebration on Halloween at the church they play games and hand out bags of candy and watch movies and stuff. Maybe your church or a church around there has something like that. -Amber
