Popular books that have overused and ordinary plots

I have been finding it extremely difficult to pick up a book, read through the first 100 pages and truly enjoy it. On the market lately, especially in popular fiction and non fiction, the stories seem all the same. I'm fed up of reading depressing memoirs and life stories, of children being beaten and abused, of husbands leaving their wives, and other morbid topics. The most recent over rated book that comes to mind is the Memory Keppers Daughter. I know this was hugely popular but I just could not relate to any of the characters, and found it difficult to get through. I actually put it down half way through. Anyone recommend something they cannot put down, along the lines of Wally Lamb I know This Much is True, The Kite Runner, Marian Keyes books are also easy to read books.
