Toilet seat: Up or Down? and why.

Toilet seat down - Which was is the correct way to leave the toilet seat?

I think it should stay down. Women have to do #1 and #2 sitting. Men can do #1 standing (and sitting) but HAVE to do #2 sitting. So sitting seems like the best option here. Sort of like the X and Y chromosomes. To have a female you need 2 X chromosomes. To have male you need 1 X and 1 Y chromosome. So since the x represents female AND since there are more x's then y's it would only make sence that we have the right to put the toilet seat down.

I think the entire thing should stay down, Seat AND Lid. For one it looks better. When i walk into a bathroom I don't need to be staring at the toilet water if all I want to do is wash my hands or blow my nose. And two, when flushing a toilet, do you have any idea how far toilet water can fly? If you keep the lid up, spray from the water can actually reach your toothbrush! No thank you. Close the lid please and keep toilet stuff in the toilet.

Hi nicolec, I wouldn't want to stare at the toilet water either. Especially if it hasn't been cleaned and there is a ring around water. Gross. I agree 100% about the germs reaching your toothbrush. That is just too nasty.

I agree with you nicolec! I'm always putting both lids down and I can related to flushing the toilet and actually feeling the water jump out of the toilet! Not sanitary at all! And not only that, but getting up in the middle of the night, not being able to see very well, having both seats up, and actually falling into the toilet! I guess that would teach one to turn lights on first!

I agree with you about the toilet seat being down. When I was still living at home, and before Mom and Dad divorced, we had a black toilet. I don't know why... anyway, it was impossible with that to see i the seat was up or down, and I fell in more times than I care to count. There were THREE women in the house and one man. That seat should have been DOWN at all times!

Hey Danishcanadian. Sorry to hear about the toilet falls. I have fallen (literally) victim to that as well. It is not cute and makes me want to jump in the shower right away. Thanks for responding.

The lid needs to stay down! I have to share a bathroom with two of my brothers and they continuously drive me nuts with this sort of thing. Either they will leave the seat up and I'll end up falling in because I'm not looking at where I'm sitting or they will leave it down and end up getting urine on the seat. I'm not sure which is worse! Probably the urine on the seat one. It also gets me riled up when one of them uses the last of the toilet paper and they don't replace it with another roll. Does that happen in your household too? or are my brothers the only lazy guys out there?

oooooooooo I so know about the toilet paper roll. Especially when you sit in the pee and there is no paper!!!! I could scream at the top of my lungs. My bro is so lazy about this too. I'll test him and grab some paper from our stash and leave it on the counter and leave for work. When I get home at night they are still there! So I'm like ok lets see how long it stays there and I use another toilet. When I know he used the toilet I check the counter and they are still there! When I confront him he tries to lie and say he didn't use the washroom and starts laughing.

You know what. I never ever thought about the dog. That is gross. I am seeing it in my minds eye right now. All that slobber over your face....eeewww. Well I guess I shouldn't talk. I did something similar. My mom will never let me forget it. When I was little my pacifier fell on the floor. My parents never let me put it back in my mouth unless it was clean. So I went to go wash it off but couldn't reach the sink....so I used the next best thing...need I say more.

Yes! The poor cats. If they only new what they were doing. Isn't toilet water supposed to be the cleanest water anyways?

Haha wow, you have really thought the reasoning through! I agree though, I think the toilet seat should be down. I think it's sort of tacky to walk into the bathroom and see the toilet open. It just looks sort of gross, lol. I like to have the lid closed too though. It just looks a lot neater and cleaner to me, and also nobody has to worry about falling in or something :P ick! lol

Your explanation why you would keep the toilet seat down makes sense. Of course I prefer it that way too LOL the things in our house are quite divided being 2 male and 2 female so sometimes there's a bit of a war about the toilet seat up or down :):):)

Thanks for the compliment. Our house is divided to but I think we pretty much have the men trained. My brother and I share a bathroom and 98% of the time the seat is down....the downside of course is the pee that is on the seat.

Lol! I love your reasoning! I think it's polite to leave the seat down & also the lid, if there is one. I do not ever like to see inside a toilet if I can help it. I just think it's nasty. Even if I were male, I would feel the same way.

lol. Thanks for the compliment. I really do come up with the weirdest things sometimes. I just stated typing and that was the end result. My boyfriend is the opposite of me. Seat always up. When I go to his house and don't put the seat back up he yells from the bathroom, "I can always tell when there's a female in the house."
23 Oct 07
I quite agree - I have a well trained partner, but when his brother comes to stay it really annoys me that he leaves it up. My personal view is that however you find it is the way you should leave it - and that is seat down and cover down too.

Congrats on the trained partner. I have one too. He's an up guy at his place and goes either way when at mine. The best part is that he will wipe the seat if he knows his aim was off. He even does what I do and sprays a little disinfectant on the seat. What a jem.

I like my toilet seat down as I used to read a lot about Feng Shui. It says your toilet seat should be down as it is a water feature, having the lid up represents all your money being flushed down the toilet. So I got into the habit of assuring dunny seat is down and it looks much neater too.

I've read a Feng Shui book and I don't remember them saying anything about the washroom. Interesting. I'm going to tell that to my boyfriend. Maybe he would be able to take me to dinner or something.

In China, most toilets are dirty so women cannot sit down. You have to keep a unconfortable pose. It is a hard thing to solve.

Hi ck0098. I am familiar with uncomfortable poses too. I use them when I use public washrooms.

LOL LMAO ha ha ha. well, by that time you didn't know what it was. i catched my puppy once and i was so freaked out because I just cleaned the bowl and the cleanser still in it. Wel, it is over now,. I always watch out for the open door and close it so he could not get in. I think he learned the lesson that water was yucky not for drink because he did not do it from that day since. Bless my heart. Phew.

yeh it can be down or up. It really doesn't bothe rme at all. Some ppl just like to blow things out of proportion. As long there's not piss on the toilet I'm fine.

Thanks for responding marabdl86. It isn't really a big issue with me and does get blown out of proportion by certain people.
