Does your child go to a school where there is an outbreak of the MRSA case?

I am hearing a lot on the news about MRSA. I'm hearing about it everyday. A local high school recently died from it. Now I hear that there are cases of MRSA at my child's school and there are several elementary children who were dignosed with it. I am concerned and hope that my child does not get it. I tell him to wash his hands often and use hand sanitizer. How will I know if he could have been exposed to it? What else can I do to prevent it other than telling him to wash his hands often?

I would be a it concerned too. MRSA is not new but and I thin it used to be more something that one would pick up in an hospital, but there seem to have been a few outbreaks here and there that have nothing to do with hospitalization.
Bacterial infections are usually easy to cure but in this case because it's resistant to antibiotic is something to be careful about. Although it doesn't mean that it is resistant to all antibiotics, just to the most common ones which leds me to think about the over use of antibiotics and how dangerous that can be.
You're doing fine asking your child to wash hands often because skin contact can be a form of transmission.
ALso look for skin irritation or any cuts or wounds that take a long time healing or get infected.

I worried about my grandkids who go to school here in MA until I did some reading on the subject but now that I know how it can be transmitted and know my grandkids are such clean freaks I'm not as worried any more. If anyone doesn't know what MRSA is about check out this site it has a lot of good information.

That is awful scary I am sure. I am not familiar with MRSA could you please tell me what that is or explain it to me. Is MRSA short for something. I live in Canada and haven't heard of this, however we have had our share of trouble with SARS a few years ago. Thank god my kids are all grown now so less of those fears. I would really appreciate it if you could tell me more about MRSA so that I understand what it is and where the out break is which country etc. Thanks and all the best to you and your family.

As far as I know it hasn't reached my sons school but its in Virginia at other schools. I am not sure what else we can do but teach our children to wash their hands and sanitize. It is scary this outbreak!

I share your concern as there have been several confirmed cases in local schools in my area. No deaths, but confirmed cases and that's very scary! Where do you live, if you don't mind me asking? I'm in Pennsylvania and I have 2 grandkids who are active in sports and other activities so it really is something that worries me alot. I guess what you're doing is all you can do! Tell him to wash his hands and use hand sanitizer frequently and never to eat or drink after anyone. My daughter also told the kids not to drink directly out of the water fountain at school. I'm not sure if it's that contagious, that you could catch it from the fountain but it doesn't hurt to be too careful when you're dealing with something that can be fatal. Also, I've heard to keep a close watch on any skin irritations that don't go away, anything that may look like a bug bite or something like that. Just be careful, I guess that's all any of us can do.
