For people pictures play around with them as much as you can to see what you like. Try centering them or putting them to one side. Try taking a picture from above them and below for different effects. Think about your lighting, don't position them in front of a window as you'll get more of a silhouette. Try different distances from the subject - closeups for expression pictures and further away for action. Try taking natural photos rather than posed photos, they often come out better and look nicer.
