Filk songs - what are they?

I just responded to a discussion where I mentioned filk songs. I checked but didn't find any references to filks on mylot so I thought I'd enlighten people. The word "filk" started as a typo at some long ago science fiction convention where someone wanted to put into the program "science fiction folk songs" but typoed "filk" for "folk." So what exactly is a "filk." A lot of the time its a common tune with new words of a science fiction or fantasy bent. Sometimes its a whole new piece of music. Once in a great while a famous group will write a hit that could be considered a filk by those in the know. The Fixx wrote a song called "Saved by Zero" that upon inquiry they admit was writen because of Doctor Who and the regeneration between Tom Baker and Peter Davison's doctors and the use of/invention of the Zero Room. Toward the end of the song, instead of "we must win" the line is "Who must win."

There was a program last weekend with the Bedlam Bards here in town. I don't know Voltaire - well the old French poet, but not a filkster. Mercedes Lackey did filks until she became such a popular writer. I quite like what Leslie Fish does.

Must have been a Browncoats Shindig. I saw them earlier this year, and it was such a fun concert! Voltaire did a bunch of Star Trek filk up through DS9, I don't know if they're still around. And after this discussion, I've got "thank god I'm a nobleman" set to the tune of "thank god I'm a country boy" stuck in my head, lol.

That was a new word for me. I like folk songs and I like science fiction and fantasy, but I have never heard the term filk song. I liked the old Dr. Who, the new one just doesn't have it for me. (Whatever the it is.) Thanks for the lesson.

That is really interesting. I had never even heard of filk songs, but now I bet I know something no one else around me knows. : ) I like learning new things, especially when they are ecclectic tidbits of information.
