I know what you mean, although no one has given me a nickname since I left school and the nick names I was given at school were horrible! I was a fat child and wasn't that good looking and I was called so many hurtful nicknames. My name is Brian and people would call me Brain and I didn't even know them when they came up to me and called me it. It's ignorance and the worst thing I hate is when they spell my name wrong. Some people can be so clueless and unfeeling.

I do hate it! I've been getting unwanted nicknames for as long as i remember. I remember some of my relatives calling me "Dianding" when i was a kid, then there was a time my classmates called me "DK" since there were 2 Diannes in our class, some would reverse it "KD". The most recent nickname i got from a bunch of friends is "kokey" which i really hate. They thought i resemble this local alien character on TV because of my short stature. It's been months since they started calling me that and i think they have gotten used to it and the nick's starting to stick. argh!

My neighbour and office coleague calls everyone with pet names. Some change in the original name or with girly, sweety etc. For almost 27 years, she has been calling me with that name and I feel a sense of closeness in that.

I have no idea why people do this but I remember when I was growing up my moms boyfriend use to come up with all these nick names for everyone he met so he could remember them. Well it turns out that most of the names he came up with for people usually sticked. Its like 15 years later and I still know of a group of at least 25 people that still go by the nick names that where given to them. Again I don't know why people do this but I guess that's how people get their nick names.
