Gem Mining

Has anyone here tried out gem mining? I've been watching the Travel Channel and there have been a couple of shows about gem mining. They talked about this place in North Caroline where you can buy a bucket of rocks and sift through them to find gems. People have actually gotten lucky and made pretty good money from the gems they have found. I think this might be something that would be fun to try out. The buckets aren't very expensive so it might be a good day of fun. Has anyone tried this? If so, did you find any good gems worth anything?
