Do You Have An Emergency Plan?

In light of our California raging fires, and with over 300,000 people evacuated, I wonder how many of us have an emergency plan. What about an Earthquake, hurricane or floods? Do you have a meeting place in the aftermath? Do we have extra food etc? How prepared are we? Discuss and tell us your escape plan, or your stay-put plan.

Well, now that I live in England, which has virtually no natural disasters (knock on wood), I don't really have much of an emergency plan in place. When I was at home in Florida, hurricanes are pretty common, so there's always some sort of emergency plan. It's pretty basic and doesn't change from year to year. If the hurricane looks like it won't be too bad, stock up on water, non-perishable foods, matches and candles, a battery radio and a first aid kit. Always fill your car up with gas. If it seems as though the hurricane will be a bad one, then pack your essentials, lock your house up and evacuate until it's passed.

Well, that was an awesome Florida plan anyhow. I forgot about filling the car up with gas. That would be part of a sound plan. And, btw, didn't England just go through a major flooding period? Didn't hit your part of the country? That's good. Anyway, thanks for your input NewW, have a wonderful day.

Yeah, in Yorkshire, just south of us, there was some major flooding. It was a really big deal because something like that only happens once in a great while. I don't know what I'd do in that case, because other than sandbagging, there's not much you can do but take your valuables and evacuate.

I use to have a plan in place when our kids were home but haven't given it much thought since they moved out a few years ago. I also had a small emergency kit which was kept in my car. We don't have to worry about flooding in our immediate area but we do have our share of tornadoes. And fires are always something I think about but don't necessarily worry about. We have fire alarms in the house and our burglar alarm connects directly to the fire dept. in case of fire. We could stay with one of our kids if a major disaster happened in our house. The only fire plan we could put into effect would be to jump out windows if the steps were blocked. If the windows wouldn't open because of heat or intense smoke and not being able to see them or get to them, it would be a major problem.

I guess the major problems is what we need to work out. We just installed a burglar alarm too. Feel much safer. Thanks, Carolbee for stopping by. Have a good one.

We do not have an emergency plan. We have a small house, and so it is the matter of grabbing all that is important and throwing it out the door. I doubt, God willing, that we will have a problem. We do not have a battery run radio or a laptop, although I do have a cell phone, but I am waiting for enough money to buy a wireless headet before I use it.

Yes, but what will you grab? lol. And, by the way, my brother just told me that during a disaster such as an earhquake or something phone lines will be down as will our cell phones. Mmmm, I think I better get another plan in action. Stay safe now.

I used to live in a house that was on a flood plain and had a big box stocked with torch and batteries, a small camping stove and gas, a large container of water, some non-perishable food and a supply of batteries and a radio. Fortunately I never had to use the emergency box but I do still keep it just in case of an emergency now. If I had to leave the house I would grab the box and my file box with my documents and go to my family.

You sound prepared my friend. Never get rid of that box because you know what happens when you do. You'll need it then. Good thing about the file box with your documents. Thanks for the info. Have a wonderful day.

I have an emmergency plan for any situation. It could be a natural disaster (as unlikely as that is in Ohio), or it could be anything. I have two bags. I have some clothing I can wear, a space blanket, a small regular blanket. A few blank books, pens, I have granola, cereal. canned tea, water, and other non-perishable foods. Light-weight stuff so that I can easily carry it. I have a suitcase and a duffel..so I can quickly pick them up, put on my tennis shoes and run away if needs be. Flooding, if its coming means I need to get the hell out of here. Fire, same situation. Earthquake I stay put and stand in the doorway of my room...or run into the streets in case my house should try to fall apart (even though that's still unlikely). I can run away if my parents turn evil for any reason, lol. The simplest plan's always best, right?

We suffered by gigantic disaster after earth quake on 8th October 2005. Thousands of Kashmir, Pakistani and Indian people were buried under the ruined buildings in result of this dangerous and unforgettable earth quake. Government and NGO’s and foreigners tried to rehabilitate the suffering people. The theft of foreign aid and white color crimes failed the proper help process of the suffering poor. And nothing more was done. We have no hope for future planning. All is going on and we are living among many many risks of storming dangers. We are living in cage of God and we believe and hope that his mighty God, the creator of Universe and his creature will arrange all sort of security plan for us.

I feel so bad about the fires and pray everyone is OK. We actually aren't very prepared for an emergency. I am in NY and we do get hurricanes and blizzards. We have flashlights and such but we don't have anything spacial in place in case of an emergency. My husband is an avid outdoors man and survivor and knows how to survive in any condition. I know he would know what to do but we should have some things in place. We have a basement which we would escape to in the case of a windstorm or hurricane and we have had many, many blizzards and had to sit there in the freezing cold and dark waiting for our power to be restored. We couldn't drive, couldn't leave the house. That scares me because of the food situation. Everything was ruined in the fridge. I think I will pick up some non perishable food in case of another long lasting blizzard. The time is fast coming for it to start snowing!

I'm telling you that having some sort of conversation about this with family can bring a certain peace already. Then to have something in place would be far better. At least you guys have a basement, not to mention a hubby with survival skills. Stocking non-perishable foods and drinking water would be a major start. We always think of these things when there's a disaster. I really need to get off my butt and start planning. Thanks, my friend for the input.

Hi!! Nope, afraid not. Don´t have the money to get insured. And I figure, when the time comes, I will deal with it. If I die, then it´s my time. I don´t like to worry ahead of time. Some things I do, but I beleave everything has a reason. To worry about it , while it is not there, just is not my way. I know alot of people will disagree. And I am for , if you have the money and are in an area that has risks involved. It would probably be better to have a plan ect. But, just a couple of months back, I needed some extra money and stopped my savings plan 10 years to soon. But, had already paid 10 years in a row. I got back 2000 euro´s less then I had put in. NEVER AGAIN! I would have been better off to put it in a normal savings account, would have had 2000 more! So forgive me if I am not all for this insurance and savings stuff. They all make money from it, execept the people that put the money in it. I believe in insurance, for a car and normal risk things. And I believe in insurance and savings for making money. When people come to my site and need insurance, I get paid for promoting it.LOL. Then I like it. Have a nice day. Groetjes Margajoe.
