2.5" mobile disk drives

I have some questions about the pin-out of a 2.5" mobile disk drive. Will it function as a USB external drive with only it 40pins connected? Since I have bought a UIT HDD Player from dubai and when I connected it to my PC it won't show in My Computer and also in the Disk Management. The only place it would show up is under the Device Manager-Disk Drives as "811 ATA/ATAPI Device USB Device" so I decided to open the enclosure since I was curious as to why it would not function. I was surprised that not all the pin are connected but it led light is "on" Can someone enlighten me about this...
