Walmart worse than Mafia?

I watched a documentary yesterday called "Walmart-High Cost of Low Price" and I was absolutely floored. I knew that Walmart doesn't treat their employees too well, but I had no idea just how bad and corrupt they really are. Anywhere from bullying to harassing and also having a complete disregard for the environment and labor laws. Not providing security in their huge parkinglots, regardless to the customers safety. There is much more and much worse, which you will be able to see. I found the documentary on youtube, unfortunately it's split into 11 clips, but I urge everybody to take the time to watch it. Part 1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ED6YaRl93CE Part 2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SFn7syPIbfM Part 3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Moe5YEuZWwg Part 4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pLWZIUd8x6E Part 5 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmixsFpgD6A Part 6 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uWhghph7FH8 Part 7 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jfr8JQbCix0 Part 8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xyqt185Y2BU Part 9 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=msE6Mv5-5zw Part 10 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TBIwr39CS8M Part 11 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T-NSRS2bsEE And watch this little tidbit too. Confessions of a Wal-Mart Hit Man http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-mQH9DloKD8 I for one will refuse to spend a single dime there anymore. I rather pay a couple of bucks more or just wait for the good specials at other stores before I support those kind of business practices. The only way businesses like this will change, is if the customers start speaking up and refusing to support them.

Its a free country! Why would anyone work there if its as bad as your info makes out? People are free to choose. I've never heard of any Walmart store having trouble finding employees. Why is this, if its such a bad working environment. The walmart stores here in canada are staffed with Happy and friendly people. And they even hire seniors to greet and give out carts inside the doors. Yes as Far as I can see, Walmart is as good a working environment as there is in Any big Canadian store.

I was just wondering if you watched the documentary I posted, because nothing is as it seems. This is based on the Walmarts here in the United States. In Canada there might be stricter labor laws in place that prevents Walmart from doing the things they do here. "People are fee to choose". That is not always true.If Walmart monopolizes the shopping market in one area, and is the only place for people to work, then they have a choice between working for Walmart or let their families go hungry. Not much of a choice, is it?

Max, Healthcare is not free in Canada. We pay for it with taxes. We pay about 12% on everything we buy except food. And Walmart didn't fire everyone when they stopped the Union. They just closed the store completely for one year, and then hired everyone back who would work for the same wages without the Union.

Hoe else did you think they were able to have such low prices, they had to be making cut somewhere, I think I know what documentry you are talking about and I also saw another one where it said they will be adding 500 new stores to asia mostly China, Japan and Russia so we won't be the only ones getting the short end of the straw, and the sad thing is we can't do much about it, protesting and refusing the store only makes things worse and for ever tom do gooder there is a sally and mike know nothing who can't resist the store and all it's great low prices.

I haven't watched this documentary because I personally feel that there is always someone quick and ready to make a uick buck so big comapnies like Walmart or no exception to the make the busk rule by any means neccessary. Plus, its so amazing how Walmart is always in the middle of some media for some kind of scandal, when walmart owns so many other companies and stores and you don't see them in the middle of media scandals. Like Lowe's, Sam's club, Lowe's supermarket, etc. So I can't see myself stop shopping somewhere because someone have something to say about it all the time. Just imagine 1 person that don't shop at walmart there are still 5 people that will pick up that 1 persons slack. So they're never be a make or break situation. Good discussion but this is my opinion. PS I have not problems with them at this moment my husbands been working for them for less then a year and received 3 raises and a promotion. He is also do for another raise for his 1st yr anniversary. So as long as they are paying my bills w/out any problems they(walmart) won't have none w/me :)

I don't shop Wal-Mart for that very reason. I have heard stories before about how bad the employees are treated and I know a local girl who was killed leaving work at Wal-Mart by someone following her from the lot and bumping her car from behind after she was on her way home. He kidnapped her, raped her, and killed her. I will go anywhere but there to shop!!

I watched the special they had on cnbc...it was amazing what they do....When they roll back prices they expect the manufacturer to do the cutting. According to the documentary they had on they have shutdown some of the largest manufacturers in America. They gear them up to do big orders then they expect them to cut the prices....and they can't afford to. My question would be...how much do a few people need? I mean Sam Waltons kids...how much do they need and at whose expense?

Any store can have managers who are bullies. - walmart store sign
I know a number of people who work at the walmart in my city and they have been there for years even having transferring from other stores because they have moved and none of them have anything but good things to say about the company and how they are treated. I think you will always find one or two bully's and bad managers in any store and the people who have problems with them build small incidences up into huge problems. I've known people who work in small unknown stores who have the same problems but since they are unknown stores the media doesn't hear about it.

I guess I have mixed feelings about this. I have in-laws that work for Walmart and a few friends that do and I have heard mixed reviews on working there. As far as shopping goes I shop there mainly because at 3am its the only place open. I also shop at Costco, ACE Hardware, Home Depot, Safeway and Rite Aid. I don't limit myself to one store, I compare shop and go to where ever the price or goods are the best. There are plenty of things I won't go to Walmart for, mainly because they just don't have what I want or need or its of poor quality. When it comes to camping good I go to the sportsmans warehouse or GI Joes because thats what that store is for, camp supplies. I look at walmart like I do any big company, its goal is to get the majority of the buisness in an area and keep it. The same can be said for many fast food chains that are popping up everywhere. I guess there is good and bad with every company, its mostly up to the shoppers to make sure stores like this don't close down their towns. Don't quit shopping at your local places just cause a big store pops up.

I watched this documentary the other day as well amd I was floored!! Between what I have heard from people I know who have worked at Wal Mart and this documentary, I will never spend a dime there anymore either. It's a very scary place to work! I will be supporting my small, local retailers a lot more. At least I now they dont partake in the evil practicies that Wal Mart does.
