The town of Palm Bay, Florida is considering pass ing a law that would ban Chinese-made products. This is from an article on ABC News site. The article goes on to add that if passed, the law would apply to purchases made by the town while citizens would maintain their right to buy whatever they choose. It also stated that this would be the first of this kind of law passed in the United States.

I say, good for them! It's a step in the right direction. As long as we keep buying these products,China will continue to mess up and choose the cheapest route to make products regardless of peoples health.

You are right, Riptide, and if we, the people don't stand up and voice our opinions on these matters, then we deserve to be taken advantage of.

I think it's high time that such a ban be made nationwide and not just in one area of Florida...but maybe this is a step in the right direction that will eventually lead to banning Chinese-made products completely

ol that is a redicoulus statement. you think AMerican companies will be willign to pay their workers 10-15 bucks an hour making toys when they can get the same toys made for less overseas?? your kidding right. Then expect to pay over a 100 bucks for toys from now on. They would be forced too sell stuff that expensive, to make a profit. with all respect:) No,...it's not a ridiculous statement...so many Americans are complaining that there aren't enough jobs here in this country precisely due and because American businesses have gone on the cheap to hire workers willing to get hardly anything as pay...it is because of this attitude that we are ourselves guilty of creating the illegal immigrant issue, cause lets face it....who is a farmer going to hire to pick crops...an American where he'll have to pay the minimum wage (which is NOT 10-15 an hour) or a few pennies to an illegal migrant worker--America has created its own problems with this kind of thinking.... And yes, I'd be very willing to pay more for anything if it was made in this country rather than getting inferior, hazardous materials from China

The town is Palm Bay, Shaun, and I don't know enough about Florida to say exactly where it is, but you can find the story on ABC News.com.

That is a starting point, let people be aware of how dangerous the products can be and raise people's awareness about what they are buying.

I think it should be done for the entire country, Debs, because the situation really isn't getting any better.

Notice the term 'small town' i have no doubth we are dealing with a bunch of racist hicks. Meat at walmart atleast once a year is deadly, so what are they going to do? Not shop at walmart anymore or eat meat. It's redicolus really. I bet if the companies in CHina paid their employees a descent wage they would put some more effort into their work! Imagien having to go to work everyday making things and making about a few pennies a day! You would do garbage work as well. Get your facts straight before you start persucuting ppl! With all respect to that 'hick town'

What does that have to do with racist? And people from small towns are not necessarily hicks. Now who is being prejudice? How can you scream racism and be prejudice yourself all in one single phrase? I'm sure those underpaid workers did not mix the lead into the paint that went on those toys. It has nothing to do with underpaid workers. It's not like those things are made so crappy they fall apart, that would be a sign of a careless worker. But not high levels of lead in paint. Also tainted petfoods,I highly doubt the underpaid workers decided to mix in ingredients that are harmful to the pets. Ingredients in food and parts for toys and such are ordered and supplied by the higher ups,and the workers have no control over that. You need to get your facts straight and start thinking a little deeper before you start ranting.

I agree with both Riptide and pyewacket on this one, marabdl. China has shown repeatedly that they have no concern for the inferior products they are exporting into our country. It is wrong because these products have the potential to harm our children, our pets, and even us, ie. the tainted toothpaste. There is nothing racial in this matter, it is just using common sense.

OK, did I miss something? I didn't see anywhere were anyone was being persecuted. It said the TOWN would not buy Chinese products, not the citizens. In one of the lead-based paint recalls, the paint was purchased from a friend of one of the people high in the company. That doesn't reflect AT ALL on the workers.

Honestly i don't really care. But let me say this, we have our own faults as well and i agree CHina needs to have some kind of guidlines to follow. To say getting paid penny's isn't one factor here is redicoulus. How do you know that a worker has a grudge against america and decided to add rat poison to some wheat? all because he's tierd of supplying food for us and only getting paid notthing for it. You have these corrupt bosses as well. They bullcrap their employees to think that they only make a few dollars for everythign because "that's what AMerica's only willing to pay" and makes us seem like the bad guy when in fact he's the greedy one with the few millions of dollars. I got my facts staright and look at things differently then you.

I am glad it is the town that has to follow the ban and not the citizens.I don't think they know what would happen if they stopped using all the things that are made in China. The only things in the town to buy would be some fruits and vegetables.

That speaks to how big the problem is, sarah. Until now, America has not had to depend heavily on any foreign country to supply its needs. We should go back to producing our own products for our needs. It's the right thing to do.

That's a great idea and I hope the beginning of a new trend. If only more towns, then maybe counties, then states were to follow their lead. I know I've been looking at everything I buy and it's not easy to avoid buying products made in China! There was some packages of frozen fish on sale at Save-A-Lot for a really good price and I picked it up and then I saw it came from China; I decided I'd go without the fish until I could afford to pay the higher prices! That's IF I can find fish NOT from China. Annie

It's everywhere you go, anniepa. Products from China have literally taken over. I, too, have been looking more closely at the products I buy. I will avoid buying products made in China whenever possible.

I agree with your statement Anniepa. Although I'm against making a law for everything...where China is concerned enough is enough. Once again I was naive enough to believe that one of our fearless leaders in the legislature might have the courage to do something.....what a joke.
