Do you think short people are intelligent?

Another discussion got me thinking about this one...In my experience people who are shorter are treated like children or immature adults, and sometimes even as if they don't have the intelligence of an "average" adult. It is harder to get any respect too as many people act as if short people are no different than children. I am 5'3", 28 years old, and I have a genius level IQ...yet other adults still assume I'm clueless or act patronizing toward me. Any other short people experience this? How do all of you "average" and "tall" people feel about short people?

I'm only 4'9" but nobody's ever act as though I were stupid. In fact, everybody who barely knows me always thinks that I'm such a bookworm and a serious person who probably studies a lot. I'm sorry to hear that some people treat short people that way. I've always been fine with my height. Nobody's ever made me feel bad about it. I like being tiny! ;-D Personally, tall people (my friends are taller than me) love leaning down on me to hug me he he he he...And they like helping me out to get stuff located in/on high places that I can't reach. They feel useful and I feel glad for their help. ;-D

Hi, foxyfire! Yeah, I guess so. I didn't even know there was this kind of problem until I joined MyLot. I read a similar discussion once. That's a pity that people judge others just by their height.

I'm 5' and not quite half an inch so I'm short! I can't honestly say I've ever felt patronised because of my height. I've certainly experienced people being patronising toward me in the past but I don't think my height (or lack of height!) had anything to do with it. There again I wear heels a lot so unless people see me without shoes on, or on the very rare occasions I wear flats, they maybe don't realise how short I am.

If you've never felt it then you are certainly lucky! I hope the patronizing experiences you have had weren't related to your height at least! Heels are a short girl's best friend sometimes...I rarely get to wear them but I still like them!

When I read this question out loud my 11 year old said "yes". LOL! Of course she would. Both my ex-husband and ex-boyfriend are short, possibly shorter than me and I am 5'2", and they are both dumb as doorknobs. I don't think height has anything to do with intelligence. I think economic status does as those with more money can afford a better education. But body stature means nothing.

Hmmm...you just made an interesting point when you mentioned economic status. People also have a tendency to associate health with big strong people, while small people tend to be viewed as weak and sometimes sickly. It is generally assumed that healthy people have the MONEY to stay healthy and weak or sick people can not afford to. All of that combined points to the same conclusion...regardless of if there's any truth to it. Larger/taller people are smarter, healthier and wealthier than small people...no wonder we have such a hard time getting any respect!

Yes, it is strange. I think maybe it's because short people are also cute, which is why they are seen like children. On the other hand, people taller than the average can also suffer from the stereotype of "dumb giant." But knowing that the average for one geographical reagion can either be smaller or taller compared to others should make you feel better.

I have to agree on that point also. People often equate short with cute which then leads to them being treated like children. I am 2 inches below the avewrage American female I think...pretty sure the latest figure was 5'5". The funny thing is I'm taller than my mom and both my sisters!

This is funny because just a few days ago my cousin told me the same thing. My landlady is pretty short but she's very brilliant. I stand less than five feet and people think I'm smart. Someone even said I'm a virtual genius LOL but I can't admit that. Anyway, I can mention short people who have giant brains like Carlos P. Romulo, Napoleon Bonaparte, Jose Rizal, David Ben Gurion--Israel's first Prime Minister, Marcos, ex Sen. Juan Flavier, Ehud Barak and many more.

Whether short or tall, we are all human beings and we must respect each other for that. We must not gauge each other by physical attributes and intelligence is just relative. It doesn't depend on physical structure at all. Most of the great stalwarts in history have been short in stature, but that doesn't mean there haven't been great personalities who were tall. But intelligence depends on us and how we want to develop ourselves. IQ tests are not the final answers to intelligence. Somebody who's not good in logic might be intelligent with something else. Nobody is stupid and nobody is a fool.

Yes you are correct in that. Size is not related to intelligence at all, that was the point I was making. I also realize that IQ tests are not "final answers" I was just mentioning that to support the fact that I am not the unintelligent "child" people treat me like.

Hello, my friend....I am 5'1" and 46 yrs old...I have experienced this from people who are taller than me all of my life...of course, not everyone but alot of them...for some reason they do not respect the fact that I have grown to the perfect size for me... I maintained a 3.8 throughout college and have held many supervisory positions in my life... It seems strange to me that height is just another thing to be judged on...lol

It is a strange thing! I'm glad I'm not the only one who has noticed this. I think another thing associated with this is the whole age factor. I have no problem respecting people who are older than me (provided they deserve respect lol) and think that is the right way to be. But that would also mean that I expect respect from people younger than me...except I only get it IF they are also shorter than me because apparently the phrase "looking up to someone" has been taken too literally.

The only thing I can say here is that never judge people by their physical appearance. Short or tall people have their own intelligence and capability. The only setback probably will be that tall and good looking people always have a better chance in a job interview.

Exactly! People shouldn't judge anything based on physical appearance. I have worked with tall people who were poor employees but were treated with much more respect than the hard working short employees so your las statement is absolutely correct.

Well I'm not a "healthy"/"sexy" 6ft or taller male but I've never been judged as unintelligent due to my height. I have however been mistaken for being much younger due to my size (and face). And that comes from a whole range of people.

Ok. I think Einstein is not even that tall. But really, I think if you have been intelligent since young, and you are the type who spent the night standing, eventually, lack of sleep may cause your growth in length. Thus, making most of the intelligent being short. :P

I suppose that makes a lot of sense. his discussion was based on a tv show I watched in which a short person said that other people acted as though he was stupid based on his size so it's been good to hear that so many other people do not feel this way.

Don't underestimate your height. I am even shorter than you are. I only stand 5 feet. It's understandable with our race being an Asian. But even if you are not an Asian and is still short for your standard race, don't underrate your height or your self. See, you are a genius. There are many short people who are smart, intelligent than taller people. Carlos P. Romulo, a Filipino who has become the UN President is short, only 5' if I'm right, but he is very intelligent, smart and has the x factor. Other member nations of the UN 'look up' on him. Our present lady president Gloria Arroyo is only 4'11. But look at her. She is very smart, bright with strong personality. She does not look short at all with these characteristics. Stand out, even if you are short and other people think you are. Outsmart them in many ways like the way you dress, talk, walk (with head up high, work. Goodluck.

It isn't me that is under estimating anything, it is other people. That is the point I was making. Sorry if I wasn't clear enough. I do agree that there are many intelligent short people just like there are many intelligent tall people.

My gf is petite. And I see her cute and sassy. Despite of her height she still manage to make herself equal to those who u call average people. And besides our president is short too. If ever u have encountered the name Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. She's short but see where she stands. All I can say is that height is not a big thing. It's how you deal with yourself. If you feel short other people will see that too. If you feel tall and walk tall inspite of you being small, they'l see that you're something and cannot be discriminate.

I guessed they are sometimes treated like that because they are of the same heights as those child. But when it comes to thinking , every one can judge people unless they share their insights to anyone. Actually, the standards is not depending on the height but the substance even a tall or short people will try to share with. Brain is working.
