Overcoming your ego

Ego is all about the illusory identity we build about ourselves, around ourselves,so that we can feel secure. A child has no ego.It is free to explore. As we grow, our education and conditioning helps us build this barrier around ourselves. It's an unreal, non-existent barrier that seperates us from our true self. The ego is like darkness, it has no positive existence.Just like darkness is simply the absence of light, the ego is nothing but the absence of awareness. To struggle to kill the ego is like struggling to push the darkness out of the room. The ego is the root cause for all your anxieties, sorrows and tensions. To actively feel that you want to drop the ego, to feel the need to be rid of the burden is itself a step towards awareness.

I have a different perspective on ego than you do, and its relationship to spiritual development and personal peace. However, is the writing section really the right place for this discussion?

I like to think I keep my ego in check. I don't place expectations on other people, particularly those I don't know, so that then I can't be dissapointed. This battle was not easy, but I won in the end. Our egos often prevent us from being the real us and it comes down to social psychology. Jealousy and anger are just too of the worst things that our egos harbour, and I try to be free from both. I can be envious, but that is more admiration than jealousy which is often hurtfull. I would also have to say that women have egos that are often as big as any mans, and that is coming from a woman! lol.
