Just Why DO We Have Champagne to Celebrate Something?

In another discussion I was relating the good news I had gotten and in some of my replies to those that responded I kidded around saying, yes, let's break out the "bubbly"--meaning champagne--which got me to thinking.....
Just why do we celebrate milestone events, like a wedding, promotions at a job, happy news, New Years, and at the end of sports events, they'll come out --shake a bottle of champagne and spritz it all over.
Why champagne?...Where did this tradition come from anyway?...And...if you had happy or great news or wanted to celebrate something, do YOU celebrate with champagne?? If, not...what do you celebrate good news or times with?

Hi pyewacket! Oh, I really don't know how that tradition came to be. I am just in for the ride. hehe..just jokin. However, we do have champagne whenever we have celebrations or whatever good news that deserved opening a bottle of champagne. Take care and have a nice day.

You know, I've never understood this thing! =p
Actually, my group of friends have champagne on New Year's, but that's the only time we ever drink it. Not for any other occasion. Even then, most of us don't even like it much, so we'll just have a little bit for a toast. It's weird that we buy it every year even though not one of us is really into it.
I tried looking it up online, and all I got was that it had been used this way since the middle ages!

I guess it's just because quality champagne costs mega bucks so it's not something people would drink unless it was a special occasion - or unless they had loads of money of course! Personally I don't care for it much so one glass is more than enough for me - plus it's pretty lethal as well!

I celebrate things with dancing or chocolate myself. Usually dancing, as I was under the impression it was that uncommon of a thing to do once one has gotten good news lol.
I dunno why some people MUST use champagne.

It's funny. Last Christmas my aunt gave me a bottle of Baby Duck... so I took it to a New Year's house party for a laugh. It was opened but didn't pop. I think one or two people tried it for old time's sake, but there was a lot left over. Not so with the champers, though.
I like Henkel Trochen, myself, but haven't really felt like celebrating anything lately.

I used to get Dom Perignon years ago when my mom and grandmother were both alive and we had extra money to burn...LOL---when I do get champagne now I just get the Moet & Chandon..which is the same company that makes Dom Perignon..I sometimes can't wonder if they just put the Dom Perignon label on the same cheaper brand of Moet and claim it to be the more expensive one...LOL

I really don't know the answer as to why champagne, pyewacket, but I do know that people all over do love their spirits, lol. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that champagne is usually a bit more pricey, thereby making it a special quaff for a special occasion. I have not had champagne in years, so maybe I'll treat myself to a bottle for the holidays!

Over the years I've admittedly had to get the cheapie champagnes but I just can't think of celebrating New Years without it...some traditions die hard I guess--LOL

THAT is a great question!! I honestly have no idea!
Okay I do have one idea...maybe because back in the old days it was expensive to make/buy and therefore saved for special occasions?? And even now today we still carry on that tradition?
