When trying to make money, what defines a "website"?

In all the various ebooks, ecourses and emails that I have ran into, I keep hearing that I got to have a website if i'm going to make any amount of money online. But what defines a "website" as such? Does it mean that I have to shell out a fortune in order to buy a paid website domain and hosting in order to sell my products? Or do I have to get a free website and risk looking like an amateur, unprofessional rookie who's trying to take your money for something that might or might not work? Even I have no idea on what to do when it comes to making money through my website. But I doubt I could make money from a blog of my own or any Squidoo lens. I just don't know, and I am definitely not sure. But what actually defines a "website" when it comes to making money on the net?

When it comes to making money on the net a website is simply a place where an item/product or service is listed for sale. You say you have no idea about making money through your website? Do you have a website? You don't have to spend any money to set up a great looking website, nor do you have to register a domain name. There are plenty of people out there making money, they use platforms like tumblr, weebly, blogger squidoo etc. Some of these are blog sites some are actual websites. I think what is important is to decide if you are selling a single product or service, or will you have multiple products. Even with multiple products you can still establish a web presence with out spending any money. What is important is traffic, without vistors to your site you won't sell anything. You mention about looking professional, I've seen some pretty amazing sites which have been set up using free platforms. When you first start out you should test the market, so make full use of whats on offer. Then if your on a winner go ahead a spend some money, after all your going to get a return. If your not sure about how to or where to start, drop me a line and I'll give you a hand. Cheers Mark

I would be interested in picking your brain about the same subject matter. I am online constantly, reading and learning as much as I can. I still can't seem to put it all together. I just know that there is unspeakable amounts of money to be made on the internet, I just can't quite figure out how to do it. I am working on various projects, trying to see what works, and what doesn't, but it is going slow. Drop me a line if you'd be interested in helping me. Do you know that I'm asking myself the same question like you exactly, I tried many times to make a web site and after making it I find myself thinking what I'm gonna to do in it and how to make it attractive and the difficult thing that you'll face how I get referrals to it? how I make it well known! I keep posting mails to friends and also sometimes to people that I don't know but still need more referrals to be popular and after all that I didn't make any money till now, but I'll keep trying and you also try you'll loose nothing. Good Luck.

There are many good free websites. But basically, what these people are referring to is having your own domain name. You can register a domain for $1.99 at Yahoo the first year, and they have inexpensive hosting and a great webpage builder, too. But as mentioned before, these aren't as necessary as they seem if you know how to monetize your blog. A good place to learn more about what works and what doesn't is the Conquer Your Niche Forum. Let me know if you want the link. I'll be glad to give it to you.

Good question. I have actually asked a similar question just recently. I was going to try and sell a small business a web site. I was given a business card by the potential client and the card included a myspace website. I looked at the card and I even visited the website. I then asked myself, is this all that you need to do business? If all you want out of your business is a "presence" on the web without generating any income and want tons of social interaction, then a free blog site would be satisfactory, in my opinion. For my own personal business, I found a web host, registered my own domain name and built the site myself. I like doing that sort of thing anyway. It was alot cheaper than I thought it was going to be too. I do believe that having your own domain name with your business name in the address bar does look a little bit more professional, but that's just me. If you need a good place to purchase a site from or even help with basic web design, please send me a message. Just my two cents!
