Did you use emoticons while messaging?

Do you find it is necessary to use emoticons while messaging or writing e-mails? For me personally it's not necessary and look very unprofessional indeed. But some of my colleagues keep on using the emoticons which I find quite irritating especially the smilies. What do you think?

Well, I do use them but only sparingly. When I actually feel something. Repeated use of fancy smilies really is distracting. But it does liven up the chat.

I don't use it much, because it is quite annoying for me and hence i would prefer not to use it on others too. I have seen many of them out there who use emoticons extensively even for common chatting, instead of words they use emoticons always and it would quite difficult to interpret what they are trying to say with that.

Yes, I agree with you. The emoticons if used excessively doesn't contribute to the conversation and can be quite annoying, especially if we have to try to understand the message that's been delivered during the conversation

Emoticons if used sparingly will give light to otherwise bring and serious conversation, that's the reason they've been created in the first place. But some people do misuse it

Amongst friends and relatives I will use smilies and emoticons. I do it much more often in Instant Messaging than in email. I will also admit to some laziness in IM because of corporal tunnel syndrome, and I rarely have 'professional' discussions over IM. * For professional communications of any kind, I do not use the smilies and emoticons. * MyLot is not considered 'professional' in my eyes dispite the fact I get a few cents for the notes I write here.

I agree with you, I don't like them at all. Many of my friends use smilies everywhere and I can't stand them because I prefer a feeling expressed with words. In a professional environment then they seem to me totally inadequate.

hello ameyrp, while using messaging, I always use emotions icon, expecially yahoo messanger, all of the emotion icon is so cuteeeee, but when email I rarelly using emotion icon, sometimes only use :) and :( only, thats why I'm rarely email someone, messaging is more fun and instant arrival, so we can interact lively like using sms but without character limit, and using qwerty full sized keyboard.
