That is just horrible! Here is the article! http://www.thebostonchannel.com/news/14441228/detail.html?rss=bos&psp=news I want to say this...at 9 months, how in the world did the child "crawl" into the bucket? Just how big WAS this bucket? Good grief! I know kids can slip away from you and get into stuff before you even realize it, but who leave out a bucket of bleach water with a crawling baby, anyway? What a horrible thing to have happened! I just still can't figure out how it could have happened! I would think, if the baby pulled up onto the bucket, it would just have overturned and spilled everywhere. It just doesn't make sense that it happened.

This is why some people should not be parents. I will admit that once my daughter got into thsome exlax. We were in the process of moving and I guess she thought it was chocolate. Almost everything was packed so I guess she dug into a box for the chocolate. We were going to stay in a motel that night so you can imagine what happened. The only other big mistake was not serious but funny. We had been the store. She was about 2 and wanted to help put things away. So I gave her a box of tissues to put in her room. I noticed she was gone for a while. I found her on the floor gleefully pulling the last tissue out of the box. Ever tried to put 400 tissues back in a box?

Well, by 9 months my son was walking all over the place and him crawling into a bucket would have been a piece of cake. But you are right, who would leave a bucket of bleach were a kid can get it. Just dumb. I had an adult student who left class one time in a rush, she had twins, 3 years old and she left them with her sister. But she also left their toothbrushes sitting in bleach on a cup on the sink to clean them and one of the twins drank it. I didn't say anything - but why bleach - just buy new brushes!

When Bad Things Happen To Good People - I am hoping this book will ease the pain you are feeling right now
estherlou, Although I agree with you that this is a most horrible event; accidents do happen and that is why the word Accident exists. I worked at a cemetery several years ago and during that time I heard of some deaths that had happened under some extraordinary circumstances. In fact, one of the circumstances was a very small child (about the same age), who drowned in a bucket of scrub water while the mom went to get her 2 year old who was banging a glass object on a window. Who was to blame? I think no one. I know that it doesn't make sense. There are some things that happen in life that just make no sense at all to humans. Perhaps if you would get a copy of "When Bad Things Happen To Good People", and read it, you may be able to find some peace. I was always haunted by why some women miscarried time after time until I read this book. It is not a religious book; but a truly thought provoking and honest look into the whys of the Universe. Blessed Be~ Donna

Thats Terrible!! I wonder where the adult was when the baby was getting the bucket?? A baby can drownd in an inch of water. I wonder if he/she tiped the bucket and got his/her face in it? If so it would only take a second for the child to breath it in there lungs. Poor Baby!! I would NEVER leave anything harmfull like bleach where a baby could get it. I watch a 9 month old who is crawling and into EVERYTHING!! Its just common sence to watch your baby!!

I think this is pretty sickening. Who leaves a bucket of bleach out in the open in their kitchen with a baby that is crawling and going to sleep? Too convenient if you ask me. I think there is more to this story and I am anxious to know what other developments arise. I honestly think this baby didn't get into that bucket by him/herself. Even if there is no foul play involved, the fact that she left a bucket of bleach in full contact with kids in an enclosed area, that's neglect at the least. Not to mention she was babysitting other peoples kids! How irresponsible.

Wow, that's pretty tragic. Since the mother of the baby was only 20, and watching 3 other children, something like that is easy to see happenning. I know when my oldest was 9 months old, I was only 20 and it was tough keeping up with him. I remember having to be right on top of him all the time. It just doesn't take long for something like that to happen. Even if the baby went to lift herself up onto the bucket, it would have tipped over and the contents would have gone right into her face, drowning her and burning her throat fairly quickly. With little tiny lungs, it wont take long or much liquid for her to have drowned. Now, I no longer use bleaches, amonias, or toxic cleaning supplies, so thankfully when little children are at my house I don't have to worry about that part of it. But, you still have to keep an eye on them constantly!

I cannot see how this could have happened. The mother should have put the bucket someplace high or emptied it. Your child is more important than saving money. I wonder if the baby was at that stage where she was learning to stand, then she could have tipped over and went in head first. That is what I think might have happened. You really have to watch children of that age. My sons sat up suddenly in their box we had when we went for a drive. That was way before child and infant seat belts. I was there, but what would have happened if the window was open?

Thats really crazy. I have a 10 month old son we have a mop bucket but we only use it for the fish aquarium- yah know to pump out the old water he pulls up on that all the time there is no way at all that the little girl"drowned in a bucket of bleach" all it would do is tip over or make a splishy splashy mess because thats all he does and my son is huge he's taller that the average one year old right now it just doesn't make any sense. I could see a little baby drowning in one of those little mini pools or a bath tup but a mop bucket come on now thats like saying the baby drowned in the toilet.

all i can say is that the baby did not drown instantly.that baby was left to herself for a very long time to crawl into a bucket and drown..all this just seems a little suspisious to me.I bet that baby sitter was asleep and was not watching any of those kids...Why would she have a bucket of bleach in a bucket in her litchen anyway?.None of this makes any sense to me..

I'm in shock that their just going to leave it as a drowning. I live in Boston and I know the police are stupid but this is ridiculous. I think it's impossible for a 9 month old to "crawl" into a bucket and with little kids around what was an unattended bucket of bleach doing around anyway? Very suspicious!

I estimate a low chance of that being the real story. I'd have to see what the bucket is, what its made of. Because I'm thinking the baby would not have been able to get in the bucket by itself. It should have overturned. Even then, it depends on how developed the baby is too. If its just crawling then I'm even more suspicious about it. If it was a small bucket or saucepan then maybe... but still, why is a small bucket of bleach being left out like that? Especially with a baby being loose?

How in the world does a child drown in a bucket of bleach without anyone noticing? That just blows my mind. I completely agree that why on earth was the bucket of bleach down in a place were a crawling baby could reach it. There are a million unanswered questions. In my opinion it doesn't sound like an accident.

My goodness! That is terrible. It does sound suspicious but of course more investigating needs to be done to find out if it was an accident or not.

It is too early to tell if this was an accident or a planned "accident".It is sad. Some parents need help to learn how to be good parents. And I guess there are parents out there that should raise their kids.

It sure doesn't make any sense whatsoever. Like you said, the bucket would've spilled everywhere if the baby pulled on it. How horrible, but there's more tothis than meets the eye I'm afraid. Who ever would leave a bucket of bleach water with a baby that age crawling around? I'm not adding anything to this discussion I guess, but I'm really horrified over this! Annie

Depends on the type of bucket it was. Some buckets will take a lot of weight before tipping over. My mom was always careful with my bro and I growing up. Never left anything laying around we might get into. I'm the same way with my kids, both the 2 legged and 4 legged kind. If it's not plain water or a harmless drink, it gets put out of reach. Same reason why I make it a hard rule to put the toliet LID down. I don't want my babies trying to climb into the toliet and either drown or drink the yucky water.
