Theif or lair?

If you had to have one or the other in your life, which one would it be and why? how would you protect yourself? May seem like an odd question, but at some point we are all faced with one or the other, or if we're really unlucky-both. I think me, personally, would prefer to live with a theif-a theif you can protect yourself from to a degree, but a lair? you never know where you are....
