it depends. i like to travel in small villages. so i would like to live in the local's home. So generally i will find if there are any available contacting ways to reach the villagers who are willing to rent me a room.

Sometimes I like to book my travel on line. For example when I went to the USA I looked up Amtrak trains and found out I could get cheaper fares if I booked it then, paid for it and picked up my tickets in Los Angeles. I like to check the price of flights and book the best deal on line. I think that this is a better way than phoning up lots of travel agents. It takes far less time and gives me the cheapest fare. My last holiday was to Portugal and I booked the airline tickets on line and I also bought travel insurance.

Usually lastminute.com or its local associate. There is other sites like opodo that are useful too - they allow you to see how many places are available. Interesting is that you can get cheaper tickets on these sites than with the airline sometimes. Low cost airlines sites should be checked as they might not be included in the search because they use alternative airports. For hotels, booking.com gives a good idea of the offerings. Train tickets are much cheaper online.
