Dogs, and cats, are definitely part of the family, and anyone who wants to call them "property" obviously doesn't own a pet or doesn't have that special bond with their pet that most people do. I read a couple of the other responses to this discussion, like certain types of dogs attacking other peoples' pets and such. As for that, it is all in how you raise/train your pet, but also has to do with the natural instincts of certain dogs. Some dogs are considered to just have dangerous or unpredictable natures of their breed, like pit bulls, chows, etc. If you really care, you'll be a good pet owner. And to prevent something like this, you should take good care of your pet and make sure that they are secured/prevented from getting out of your house or yard and not able to attack anyone or other animals. And of course, it's always best to keep your pet up to date on all shots and other medical necessities (heart worm, flea meds, etc.). But like I said, dogs should be considered part of the family, not property. They are living things just like humans are, and I know for sure that no human would want to be considered "property".

well i think it should be considered at times i feel a dog is more sincere than a person from whom you expect a bit of commitment and sincerety

I consider all our my pets part of our family. They are the ones who gave gave me happiness whenever I'm alone in the house. It's really nice to have a pet around.

I don't consider my dog as my property.. Its part of the family.. He's so pampered, that at times we feel that he's not an animal, but our own child.. Dogs r so friendly with their owners that they make us feel that they r part of our family only...

Kai and Tara - Our little family
Dogs are part of the family. What state do you live in that calls them property? That would be hard in cases of divorce. Dogs love unconditionally so how can they be anything other than family? They provide company when hubby is away working. Sometimes their antics bring a smile to your face. It is hard to be depressed when there is a crazy pooch running around.

definitely part of the family not just a pet that you can get rid of whenever you don't feel like it anymore. they're not just a property.
