Tired, but still can't sleep?

I've been having problems with insomnia and sleep walking since I was a toddler. (i'm now in my early 30's) I've had sleep studies done, tried everything from chamomile tea and melatonin to prescription sleeping pills. The pills work, but then I can't wake up in the morning. No matter how tired I am, I can't seem to shut my brain off and sleep. I've tried meditating, listening to soothing music, etc. I'll go on like that for weeks, then suddenly hit rock bottom and sleep for over 20 hours. I go to bed at the same time, cut out caffeine after noon and do not use my bedroom for anything other than sleeping or dressing. (no smart aleck comments! LOL) Any suggestions on how to regulate my sleep?

Hi CoffeeWoman I can understand your situation, i get the same feeling in spurs, lasts a week and then i am fine. It is very frustrating. I do a couple of things in that week, i try putting some really slow song (got some lullaby actually) on repeat and leave it playing through the night, i try reading something very boring (study books usually help LOL), sometimes eating something really sweet helps as well, or in extreme casses i just dont go to sleep till i am absolutely exhausted (once did straight 72hrs widout sleep, after that had my system back in order). Hope something helps you..and if you find any other solution do let me know as well. take care...sweet dreams!!!

I also suffered this, I believe up until now. But this is not a regular thing for me, there are times that I really can't have a good mood to sleep. Same as you, I can't keep off the thoughts crowding my mind!LoL The best thing to do is, try to occupy your mind with something that is relaxing to think of. Most of the times, reading is my way of getting my eyes and brain weary. It does work, as I already feel sleepy after reading for half an hour!;)

I sometimes experienced it that even how tired i am I could not sleep. My eyes were already closed by my mind keeps on wondering and a lot of ideas are juggling as if I am thinking actively. Maybe those were times I am under stress, a lot of worries, or busy with certain projects.

Ok I don't know wat you think. I attend this class by a Dr or Pro. He tell us something like if you want to sleep don't count sheep because if you miss count you will have to do it all over again. Don't force yourself to sleep. Just lie down close your eyes relax and think of a cool sunny afternoon, you are lying down on a field and the sky is so blue..... kind of thing. Hope this help.
