Do you know anyone who doesn't have internet access or a pc?

Doesn't everyone have it? - internet on pc

I was thinking about this this morning and I don't know anyone who doesn't have a pc with internet access except of course my 83 year old mother. We have been trying to tell her that people her age have learned how to use a computer but she'll have nothing to do with it. lol...she won't even use a microwave. The only "newest" technological item we could get her to use...and it took us years to talk her into it...is the cell phone and that took a long time for her to figure out but since she really can't leave her apartment alone but does we wanted her to be able to get in touch with us if anything ever happened. She also uses it to call cabs since she doesn't drive. Do you know anyone who doesn't have a pc or has one but no internet access? Have you any idea why they don't?

Yes. My friend who is 29 doesn't have internet. only just got a laptop a month or so ago. I have a lot of friends in their 30's who don't have the internet or a computer. Most people have them/use them at work, they don't need them at home.

That's very true. There are a lot of people who use a pc at their work and access the internet from there.

My parents just moved and right now they don't have internet access because they can't afford it - right now. Mom wants it but like I said, can't afford it yet. My dad doesn't know a thing about the computer and won't go near it - just like your mom. lol They do have cell phones and know how to work the microwave, in fact, mom knows more about how to cook with a microwave than I do, all I know how to do is thaw things and heat things up but to cook? HA! It would come out tasting rubbery. But not my moms. She taught herself with a microwave cookbook.

I can understand not being able to pay for internet because of the price. It is ridiculous and it's not something we absolutely need so why get it?

True but I know Mom misses it and maybe some day we'll be able to get it for her. It'll be a while though. :(

Yes, almost everyone. Of all my friends, it's like 30% of us have computers at home, and like half of that 30% have internet access. That's really how it is here. Not that we don't know anything about technology, because everyone has a cellphone, even adolescents have them, even the poor, but not eveyone can afford a computer set, what more have it internet connected.

Computers have come down so much in price that it's unbelievable. I agree it's the cost of the internet that keeps a lot of people from getting it.

Yes, it is cheaper now than before. But it is still expensive for others to afford. The internet though is quite cheap. But I don't think they'll get an internet access without even having a computer. hehe.

I actually know a few people that don't have computers and some that have computers but no internet access. I think it's werid, especially in an age where most of the things we do are being done on the computer, like internet banking and communicating with people. Anyways, some of the people I know say they don't see the reason if they can go to the library once a week and use the computers there and some of the others just say they don't need it. I don't understand it myself, I love my computer, but I guess they don't miss what they've never had.

Exactly, once you have it you're hooked. I have a library only a few blocks away from my apartment and haven't been in it. My pc is right in my living room so why should I?

I have to agree to a point that the internet is a bad influence on the younger set but if they are old enough then that's another story.

I am from india and here the penetration of technology is still not that deep that one wont find a person without a pc here. A major portion of the population is still not having access to internet and computer. There is still a large chunk who are just struggling to make both ends meet. No education and no knowledge to keep with the times.

Most of the people I work with do not have PCs or internet access. I think part of it is economics and the other part is they just are happy watching MTV. They are people who do not read the newspaper or books or anything.

They have a pc and not internet? Maybe they don't want to pay the high price of it? What do you think? I wouldn't blame them either!

I do know quite a few people who have no internet access, ctry. Most of the reasons are because they think it is too daunting to learn how to use computers. My youngest daughter is a prime example. She tells me she would like to learn, but I don't know what the holdup is. She has a laptop but it needs to be updated. I am going to try and work with her on it to see if I can get her connected. My older sister keeps saying she is going to buy one, but she never does. She likes to play games like I do, and I told her she could really benefit from getting a computer.

My daughter only got a pc a few years ago when she decided to go to college and really needed it. I had to teach her everything about it. She's still not very comfortable with it but she does enjoy the time she spends on it.

Hey there, my Nan doesn't have an internet connection. She has a PC but that is only because I bought it when I lived with her for a year and then I bought a laptop and I left the PC there when I moved out. She doesn't even know how to turn the computer on, let alone deal with internet access. She has enough trouble with her DVD player which we got her for christmas last year! She's still amazed by the fact that you can talk through a cordless telephone and everytime she even so much as looks at her mobile phone she gets confused! Bless her, she's only 64 too! God help the rest of us!

God love us "older" people huh? I guess if you didn't get into it when you were in your 30's or 40's you never got into it. I'm 60 and have been on computers for years.

My parents don't have either pc or internet access. My mom did take a beginners course on using a computer and so forth but has not used it since. I think she goes to the library to use their computer, but she has yet to know how to use email. They also don't have a landline and use a cellphone instead so thats the reason why they dont have internet access.

Since you come from the United States, I have read that the PC penetration rate for the US is around 73%, which means that a quarter of all households do not own a PC, not to mention internet access. That's not bad by world standards. A major reason for this could be poverty. Lower income families with annual income less than $60K are 50% less like to own a computer compared to higher income families that have income above $60K. Families where there are children are also more likely to have PCs compared to those where there are only adults or older folks, because children are exposed to IT from young nowadays. The first PCs only came out into the market in the early 80's, and it was at least in the 90's and later before they became pervasive and invaded the homes on a mass scale. So folks who are in their 60's or older now would have little or no exposure to PC technology, and to be comfortable with using a PC. I wouldn't be surprised that those homes where there are only older folks (where the children had grown up and moved out on their own) would less likely have PCs or internet access, because they may not be comfortable operating such things in the home by themselves.
