She might have the baby early.

OK to make a long story short my little sister Jill is having here 2nd child soon. She is young only 21 and she is smoker. Well she had a Dr. Apt today and her Dr. sent her to the hospital for an emergency ultrasound because there is very little water around the baby. I'm worried they might have to take the baby out today. Now she is not due until December. I have had 5 kids but never had any problems like this. Does anyone know if there is maybe a way to put water around the baby so she can hold off having the baby until closer to her due date? Any input will be appreciated thank you.

Never heard of not having enough water around the baby. I smoked when I carried all 3 of our kids and they were fine. One was premature but the dr. wasn't sure if he goofed on the due date. Our girls did have low birth weights but were healthy. No warnings in the very early 70's about mom's smoking and being pregnant. My doctor wasn't a bit concerned. Did you check Webmd.com to see if there is any information about this kind of situation?

I have heard of using an intravenous solutions for hydration of amniotic fluid. I'd at least inquire the doctors about it. Though there is some hesitation in using it, as far as I can recall. I do wish for the best for your sister.

Wow, when my water broke, no one noticed. The nurse asked me when it broke and who change the bed..and I said I did not know it broke because I had so little which is not surprising when you are overdue. I don't think there is a way to put amniotic fluid in the sac but a baby that is born 6 or 7 or even 8 weeks early these days does not seem to be as much of a problem as it used to be. Medicine has come a long way and granted, the longer they can wait the better. Amniotic fluid is actually the babies urine. Maybe she can start hydrating herself by drinking more water, milk or fruit juice. If she has a leak, they maybe worried about infection.

I did not know that I will be calling her and telling her to drink up.

Why does she smoke? That is one of the primary causes of premature birth. Unfortunately there is no way to put any amniotic fluid into the uterus. Maybe they should put her on bedrest.

To be quite honest pregnancy is not new to me. I had my son when i was 18 then my daughter when i was only 21. Yes im an early bird for early pregnancy. I know how it feels like being a young mother. specially if you dont know anything about it. But that is a frightening news from you.Sorry to hear that.
