The right to apply for a Drivers licence......

Lou Dobbs brought for a story to me that has me shacking my head...Gov. Eliot Spitzer's revamped plan to offer driver's licenses to illegal immigrants. It has has led to a new round of criticism from political leaders and special-interest groups. Gov. Eliot Spitzer even had the gall to throw around childish nickname to those in the media opposing this revampent...Spitzer said the new policy would "improve security, maximize participation and permit law enforcement to know who is in the state driving."http://www.democratandchronicle.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071028/NEWS0201/710280347/1002/NEWS
A driver's license for illegals? Is this a good idea or the government causing more issues? Whats your opinion?

Hi Island Geko,
Well how about we know who is in this country by having them apply for the rights to be here, the visa application and THEN give them a drivers license? We could keep track of whos here and whos not if they did that! lol
I mean, do I have the wrong idea here of what illegal immigrant means, and what Border Patrol is for??
I have a friend right now who might not get an extentsion on her visa and may have to leave the country soon. But yet, many illegal immigrants that havent even applied for a visa are here getting jobs, special treatment from certain politicians and many other benefits natural born citizens have to fight for. She cant even get a work permit, but many illegal immigrants are working. My state included, our Gov is trying to protect them and give them special rights too.
Im outraged, and just totally confused as to what our so called political leaders are thinking!?!? How does this sound like a good idea?? It doesnt to me.

I am in full agreement, I feel the only way a person can get a job in the US is to have a drivers licence or State ID and a SIN card if you do not have both you can not work. This will save the jobs for imigrants who want to play it legal. Having a drivers licence to me is a for a citizen or imigrant of the US who is willing to go through the legal chanels to stay in the country not to keep track of who is in the country such as the Gov. wants. Thanks for the post. I am sorry for your friend...I hope she can get her visa extended..

Thank you Geko, Im hoping she can get it sorted out too. Im sure if she tried to stay past her date, they would be on her really quick and be shipping her out. But many illegal immigrants will remain.

So the idea of the Gov of New York is to allow people who are illegally in the country permission to drive?I keep on harping back to the word "illegal".If someone does something illegal and someone else protects them,is that not called aiding and abetting?.Is it not the responsibility of the government to stop illegal activities?But I guess it is different in New York.My bad....I thought doing something illegal was illegal.
