Actually, it is not quite that bad; but, 61% of red lipstick contains lead. These are not just the cheap ones; but, they include top brands like Cover Girl and L'Oreal.
Lead is a proven neurotoxin that can cause learning, language and behavioral disabilities and it especially toxic to small children and pregnant women (it crosses the placenta and can affect the baby).
These companies are not even listing lead as an ingrediant on the packaging and the FDA has set NO guidelines on how much lead can be included in lipstick.
Here is a link to the full story - http://www.enviroblog.org/2007/10/lead-in-lipstick.htm
The story does have a link to a list of red lipsticks without lead; so you might want to see how safe your shade is.
Until you check though, you might want to think twice before kissing a child if you wear red lipstick or wearing it while you are expecting. Better safe than sorry.
