I got my MRI results - just how should a patient wait for treatment on the NHS

Worried - How much longer do I wait
November 1, 2007 7:53am CST
I got the results of my MRI scan yesterday, and saw my consultant to discuss the findings. Basically the scan showed a considerable amount of nerve damage in my neck and left shoulder, predominantly close to the spinal cord in my neck. The consultant feels that the only options open to me now are either continued pain relief and progressively more damage, or surgery. The surgery option came as something as a shock as she pointed out that as the damage was close to the spinal cord, it would be a risky procedure to repair the damage or at the very least try to prevent further nerve damage. After I took her news on board I asked about any other possible options but she seems fairly pessimistic about anything other than surgery at present. She did say she would discuss the case with a surgeon and get his opinion before we make any further decision, and that I would probably have to wait a long time to hear further. For now all I can do is keep taking the tablets and hope that the damage does not become progressively worse too quickly. Which brings me to my question, just how long should we have to wait for medical treatment? Are the NHS waitings lists really that bad?

that is just so sad and scary. i dont think we should wait that long for a second opinion. i mean, you have to get that second opinion immediately because its your health that is on the line! when you know there's something wrong with you, then you shouldn't wait any longer and cure it immediately. we dont wait for a problem to spread and get bad. you have to have a second opinion pronto so you can decide what you will gonna do about your condition. goodluck and i pray that everything will turn out okay.

I have a list from our local health authority hun, and as you say, I need to find someone who will listen rather than fob me off with tablets. Thanks

Oh Sweetheart I am sorry to hear about this! I haven't really been online lately as I haven't been too well and then had a bit of a , for want of a better phrase, nervous breakdown and it is difficult just to speak or type but I can understand exactly how nervous, anxious and frustrated you must feel right now! I don't want to depress you more but it took well ovewr a year for me to get as far as an mri, consultants appointment and surgery for a badly ruptured/prolapsed disk in my spine! The disk problem left me with nerve damage that worsened every day I had to wait as the compression on my nerves was so bad! The surgery seemed to help until 2 months later when something went wrong in my back - I was told on the 7th of July that I had to have another mri and I am still waiting - it is now november and I don;t even have an appointment! Since then my mobility and my depression have got worse and worse and life seems bleak a lot - so the answer is that yes despite your Gps doing their best people do slip through the net of the nhs and who suffer indefinitely until they are eventually given the right tests and treatments - heck their is even a 6 month waiting list for the pain clinic! On the brighter side I have a friend who had what sounds like the same type of surgery they are proposing for you and it transformed her life for the better! Sending you lots of love and prayers my sweetheart! xxxx

Hello hun, I was wondering if you were ok as I hadn't seen you here for a while. It seems to me that the waiting lists get longer and longer and unless you are prepared to either pay for private treatment or make such a nuisance of yourself that they give you an appointment, you just have to wait and wait. Let's hope we both get our appointments soon *hugs*

Thanks to both of you! I have an appointment for the pain management clinic - it is meant to take 6 times longer so when something is taken away you always get something back! God Bless! xxx

Yes Sweet they are believe me Also my new Doctor here seems to think she has to save them money by putting my Life at risk and not doing the tests that I am suppose to have every year and not getting me to a consultant she would rather feed me Antibiotics for 7 weeks and make me sicker (yes I am going to change Doctors) To me when it is something as urgent as this you should be going to the top as she said it will get worse well how much more worse does it have to get Sweet I am so sorry this is happening to you and I really hope you do not have to wait to long Of course if we went private it would happen very fast, People like you and me who do not have the Money to go private have to suffer this Big Hugs to you

Thanks Gabs, having waited such a long time and put up with the pain, I am getting really sick of all this now. If I had the money then I would go private and get it over with. I hate being a *worrier* but it's really getting me down now.

aawww so sorry to hear about the results recycledgoth. it sounds to me that you need treatment as quickly as possible so this doesnt get worser which hopefully it wont. as for the NHS, its disgusting the waiting lists. they need to sort it out and mainly give priority to the people who neeed the treatment most like yourself and gabs. i hope you can get treatment very soon, take care

Thanks hun, I'm trying to stay positive and upbeat but failing half the time. I just want to get this sorted out but realistically I know that I am going to be waiting for a very long time as I am obviously not a high priority :-(

Good morning, dear recycledgoth. Please keep yourself in a good mood whatever result it is. I am sure that the doctors will have a good way to help cure this for you. By the way, after reading your former discussion, I talked to my best friend about his same case like you have. He also went to the doctors and got some medicine for the treatment. My friend has to keep his neck and left arm warm by wearing more clothes than we do so that he doesn't feel worse. We were talking about how this happened to him. He could not get an answer, but thought that he might have got it when he was youngster, yet he only had this break out a couple of years ago. I do hope that our advanced medical science can help erase the physical uncomfortableness from people suffering from this case. So dear friend, please keep warm and take care.

Thank you hun, with the weather being so changeable at the moment I have taken to keeping my old fleece jacket close at hand :-) and I am trying to avoid sitting in cold drafts too.

Wow!Im so sorry to hear this. I know what your going through I too am going to have surgery on my third herniated disc and that in the neck area too. Ive already had 2 surgerys prior. I have disc degernation disease. This procedure for me will be risky too but I have alot of faith in my doctor. Hang in there. I live in the united states so I dont know much about your health care. I know you get it free but whats this with the waiting? For now just take the pain meds thats what Im doing. I hope you can get some relief sweetie.

Here in the UK we have some very long waiting lists for treatment. Our treatment may be free for us but the waiting time to be seen can sometimes be not just a matter of weeks, but sometimes months or years on occasion. I'm off to get my new pain killers today, hopefully they wil help. *hugs*

I'm glad you finally found out what the problem is. Sorry to hear you have such a difficult choice to make though. :-( I think the NHS waiting lists can be very long for any procedures that aren't specifically to fix something life-threatening. You may have a wait on your hands but at least this will give you time to get used to the fact that you're planning to have a major operation. I hope you don't have to wait too long and that everything goes well when it does eventually happen.

Thanks hun, I am guessing that it will be quite some time before I even get to see anyone just to find out if they can or will put me up for the op. I feel very frustrated over all this, I just want to get this sorted out and get back to normal. I feel for anyone having to wait ages and ages for an appointment for something really serious or life-threatening, the lists get longer every day

Since the damage is close to your spine, and further damage could cause paralysis since its near the cord, I would check with another clinic or hospital for other alternatives, both to surgery and waiting for another opinion. Nerve damage is not a matter to play with, especially if it is the spinal cord nerves. The surgery may be dangerous, but something has to be done to at least keep the quality of life that you are maintaining now, if not improve it. Again, the surgery may be dangerous, but waiting unnecessarily definately is.

Thanks hun. Having had to wait for so long, and being in pain, I'm kind of used to waiting but this is getting beyond patience.

I want to reemphasize that this is not something you should wait on. This is your life and you have to keep up with what's going on and get it treated. Leaving things completely up to a doctor is foolish, even with their degrees. This is not to say that doctors are bad, its just that they have so many patients that a person becomes a number, and if they don't become proactive in their own treatment, they may become neglected; very much by accident.
