What was the origin of Halloween?

It's a world-known festivity, though it's not celebrated all over the world. In Argentina, for ex, many kids try to do it every year, but most grown ups complain because they say that it's not a local, nor spanish tradition. They always say "it's an english tradition we dont need to imitate". So where and why was Halloween originated?
