If you bite through your lip, will you keep reopening it?

Yesterday I had a wonderful day, a nice evening, and a horrible night. As soon as my head hit the pillow, I was having nightmares. Not the horror-move type nightmares, but the bad-memory type nightmares. Though I suppose in my case, those two categories aren't always that far apart. Anyways, I woke up after sleeping for an hour or two tasting blood, and discovered I had bitten my lip rather badly. It was swollen and bleeding. Today the swelling has gone down, but I keep playing with the stupid thing and making it bleed again! How the heck are you supposed to NOT mess with an injury to your lips or the inside of your mouth? Have you ever had this problem?

When i was younger i split my mouth open pretty badly, i needed stitches on both sides of the inside of my mouth from the back of the jaw line right to the corner of my lips, I don't know how many stitches i had on either side, but i know it was a lot, and i can still feel the scars on the inside of my mouth with my tongue, well and my fingers if i decide to stick my hands in my mouth like a child haha... Anyway, long story short, i pulled the stitches out so many times my mother and the doctor brainstormed on how to get me to stop so they wouldn't have to keep putting new ones in. Eventually they restrained my hands, and i learned how to pull them out with my tongue and my teeth, i don't know why i kept doing it but i do know that to this day, it's the same thing, if i cause my mouth an injury, i can't stay away from it, i will just keep playing with it or bothering it, and it's not just on my face, the thing is, for some reason, i think the reason is that i kinda like pain. I know it sounds crazy, i don't like intentionally hurt myself or anything, but when i do get hurt, you'll usually find me playing with it to make it sting a little more. My hubby calls me sadistic because of that haha....

I had some stitches on the inside of my cheeks before too, and I did the same thing. It was nuts. =p Eh, I can't comment on liking pain I think. *laughs*

Hello lecanis! I am sorry that your lips got bitten. I know it would have been quite painful and especially the unstoppable urge to play with injured lip just to reopen it again. It is painful...yes, I know! My inner side of the lips get bitten frequently in summer and outer side gets very dry in winter. So my lips seems to be a pain all along the year. To make it worse, I can't stop my tongue playing with the open cut! I was wondering though, if you can recall, what made you cut your lips while dreaming, any idea!?

Eh, it's one of the same nightmares I always have, about something that actually happened to me. I'm thinking it was the physical pain that happened in the dream caused me to bite my lip... I think when the event happened I bit my lip open, but there were so many other things going on then that it's hard to even focus on things like that. Hard to explain without being graphic.

Poor Babe, I am so sorry. The only suggestions that I have may be a bit unpleasant but they will work. Before going to bed instead of lip treatment, use vaseline on your lip. It will coat the wound and it is also so disgusting you won't want to lick it off to torment yourself. Every time you catch yourself doing this, add more vaseline. If this doesn't work, I will try to look in some of my herbals to see if I can find something else that will. Another tactic is more of a diversion. It will cause a bit of pain but it won't cause any damage or harm. Place a rubber band around your wrist and when you feel yourself licking, biting, or chewing on your wound; IMMEDIATELY STOP, and SNAP THE RUBBER BAND ON YOUR WRIST. You might want to try to take some Tylenol PM or the Walmart generic of it for sleep. I find that it sort of lulls me into a peaceful sleep. That's about all I have for now. Other than to say, "I love you!"~Donna

Yes this has happened to me and no I do not know how to stop biting it. It will soon heal on its own. The mouth heals fast so have patience with yourself and it will heal.

It does seem to be healed up now, though it took longer than I expected.

I hope that wasnt my fault. Making you talk and all. Sowwy. Usually I pick at my lips and purposefully make them bleed so yes it is hard to not play with. Even if you do mess with it. Eventually it will heal itself.

Eh, it's okay. I mean, it might have been because of what we talked about, but I could have easily said "I won't talk about it" and didn't. So it's not your fault. =) Haha, I hope it does heal itself soon. It hurts to be kissed! =P

I haven't done this because of a dream but I have bite my lips many times and I can't help playing with it with my tongue. Or even chew the fleshy skin off. It is so annoying. I try to gargle with salt water to help it heal faster but it is a pain. Hope you have a better night tonight lecanis

Ouch Sweet!! That sounds rather painful. Well.... Dont open your mouth too far, can you manage that for a few days? *wink* Keep some triple antibiotic medicine on it, or some chapstick to keep it moist. It will healer faster and wont keep breaking open. I sure hope this heals fast for you. I can only imagine how painful it is to eat and stuff. Ouch. Luckily I have only had minor chapped lips and nothing major like that happening. Hugs!! Bay xx
