Would you give back a family heirloom?

My friend is going through a divorce and she recently told me that one of the items being fought over was her engagement ring. It belonged to her husband's father and when her husband proposed to her, he used that ring. Her in-laws have passed away but the husband wants to keep the ring in his family as an heirloom. She wants to keep the ring too. I was thinking, since it's a divorce wouldn't a person normally give those things back especially if it's something that has been in another person's family? I was just curious on what other people would do.

Personally I can see no reason to keep an engagement ring if the marriage ends. I wouldn't want to wear it again with all the baggage and emotional ties that it entailed. As it is a family ring common courtesy would dictate to me that I would give it back but the one thing I have learned over my many years is that logic and commonsense seem to have no part in the majority of divorces.
