Political party and customs

I was watching the news yesterday and saw that members of a particular political party were sharing opium (which is banned in India). This was at a meeting and done in public. One of the member's response to a question by a reporter was that it was the custom in that particular region and it was a sign of welcome to everyone present. Now what I don't understand is if each person or region had a different custom which had to be practiced, would it be right to do it? I feel it was just an excuse for them to be using opium. What they do with their lives is a personal choice and they can abuse their bodies all they want. But doing it in public and encouraging others to do it isn't right (in the name of custom, religion or whatever). What is your take in this matter?

I agree with you. We have a politician in my state who is best known for making the punishment for drunk driving more severe, but she herself not only has a history of drunk driving, but she go caught driving while very intoxicate yet AGAIN shortly after launching the new law. Do you think they will use her own law to punish her for doing what she told everyone else not to do? No way. Already they find loopholes and excuses for her. I think people who make and enforce laws have a higher burden of responsibility to follow them themselves and that people in positions of power have a responsibility to police their own.

Hi SViswan, I dont think that should have been practiced in the public eye. I mean if they wanted to welcome the visitors in a private meeting amongst those who practice this, that would have been more appropriate. I agree with you, sounds like a reason to just openly use the opium. That really would be a turn off I would think to most who have the option of voting for this party. I agree that what you do in your private life shouldnt interfere with what you do publicly, especially in this type of field. They shouldnt display or encourage others. Bay Lay Gray xx
