When I was around 5, my older uncle taught me to "drive" the bike around their lawn. But I learned how to really bike when my other uncle who's almost my age was sort of holding and balancing the bike while i was maneuvering its pedal. When i did not realize i was balancing on my own, I saw my uncle who was like 10 feet away, that scared me, which made me off-balanced. From then on, I started gaining confidence on riding the bike. What is your bike story?

My best friend from elementary school taught me how to ride a bike. She would put me on her bike and lead me down her driveway which was a small slope. :) She also taught me how to swim. She was a good friend. I wish we had kept in touch.

Have you tried searching for her online? I have tried searching for a friend in my friendster's account, after seeing her profile I was thinking twice of adding her... I guess it must be the age.

I learned how to ride a bike when I was in high school, so I didn't need someone to tell me the basics. At first I had a bit of a problem with the balance, but it went away in a few minutes.
I don't have a bike so I can't say I ride it like a pro, but when I do, I don't fall all over the place.

I guess riding a bike is a skill, it won't be taken away from you. :) Regardless of the years of no practice.

Thank you for sharing your post. That's so cool to learn that you just learned how to bike and yet you are willing to learn, some of my friends just refused riding a bike because they are scared to have bike-related accidents. :)

I guess, the balancer is a nice technology for learning how to bike. :P

I remember sharing the bike with my two older siblings. We had 2-3 years age gap so most of the time, they use the bike and leaving me no time to ride it. One day, they were playing outside and I finally had my chance to ride it. I placed the bike outside our house and stepped on the pedal... well, I got the balancing alright and I was okay riding the bike until my siblings saw me riding the bike... I got nervous and before I know it... thump! I was on the muddy gutter.. I was 5 then, my sister was 8 and my brother was 6. No one really taught me how to ride a bike, I learned on my own... without training wheels.

I guess, you got the idea on how to by watching them. It's like self-training thing. But it's worth the try, since you have actually learned from it. :P

When I was around 5 my grandfather (JaJa we called him) taught me to ride a bike. He taught me quite the same way your second uncle taught you. I remember clearly looking back and seeing him standing there saying "pedal! Pedal!" then I lost my balance and fell over into a puddle of water. We laughed and I kept on trying until I stopped falling over.

Yeah. There are now 4 of us who had the same experience. It was really nice learning that you can do it, you thought you were still guided by your family, and later learned that it has to do with the confidence that you already have. :P

I think I was about six when I first got my bike, it had stabilizers on it and my mum had bought it for me, I was so proud of that bike, mum started to teach me to cycle, it was scary as I remember at first, but we had an area where I could use my bike without cars, gaining my balance took ages to conquer, then my stabilizers came off and I was let loose on my own! I loved that little bike. I have loved cycling ever since.

My dad taught me how to ride a bike. From what I can remember he held me steady by holding on the back of my bike as I peddled down the street. He did that for a couple of times. Then one day I turned around and he wasnt there. So I screamed of course and fell off the bike.LOL

Hey, i had the same experience with my uncle, where i thought all the while he was there but he was not, and it scared me off. It was a nice experience though, because from there I learned I can do it on my own. :)

Since I am free to do anything during my younger days, I learned riding a bike all by myself.
I have a cousin who has a bike but doesn't want to ride it or perhaps, was too afraid to ride it. That's the opportunity I saw to atleast learn how to manuever, balance and pedal a bike. It was hard for me, when someone told me to not look into the ground nor at the pedals but to look straight. I was thankful at the guy, as I took his advice and practice everyday until I can finally master maneuvering it.

Not looking into the ground nor at the pedals was something really hard indeed. Yeah, i remember, I was also told to do that, in the end you just have to trust your guts. :)

as far as i could remember. i learned to ride a bike in a public plaza wherein there was a bike rental service. There i rented a bike and started to balance myself. several times i fell, my aunt was there to pick me up. but again i rode the bike and inched my way. Until i get accustomed to it and learned to balance. when i was a kid i fear nothing. I dont know im so aggressive in learning stuffs that adult do. the bike is one that thing that i really wanted for my birthday. but my mom, dad, aunt, uncle never gave me one. They think that if i have a bike ill go anywhere and ill be prone to accident.
well, the first time i really sped with a bike, it felt like flying. such a wonderful feeling that time.

I guess, falling is part of learning when you really want to bike. It's not a painful fall, but it is something that we learn from the fall... just like life. :)

No one ever taught me about biking but only my ownself, at first I truly find it very hard but then again I was very eager to learn it until finally from all those scratches experienced that I've been through just by learning it, I now finally learn how to bike with confident. :-)

I learnt it when I was 10 years old. My father gave the bike to me as a birthday gift. But I was not clever enough .Then My grandmother said she would learn it together with me. She used 2 weeks to learn it well. But I couldn't. Then she told me how to do it. finally I got it. That cost me a whole summer holiday!! :)
