Has the kitty been up there??

Ok the birth of this disucssion stems from a couple of things, my Aunt and a comment I just got to another discussion. My Aunt has cats, always has, inside ones, outdoors ones, along with horses, dogs and chickens. But I mostly have a problem with the indoor cats. There are only 2 of them, but they are everywhere!! When I say everywhere, I mean on the counter tops, the kitchen table, the tv, behind your head when your sitting on the couch...you get the idea. So this causes hair to be all over the place. Its really hard for me to eat or drink anything at her house because of this. I mean imagine chewing away on a great meal, cos she is a good cook, and you pull a long white cat hair from your mouth.....yeah. YUCK! So to those of you who have cats, do you let them lie just anywhere in your home? Or do you stop them from climbing up on your kitchen counters or kitchen tables where food is prepared or served? Do you know someone who doesnt seem to mind them and their hair all over the place? Bay Lay Gray xx

Thankfully my two darlings are well behaved and aren't the type to go jumping up all over the place so there is no problem of cat hair being on kitchen counters or anything. The real main problem though is the sofa which I don't even dare sit on as it's theirs..LOL. I'm looking at it right now and thinking, yup, it's time to get that cat hair off! But otherwise cat hair isn't really an issue here, but I sure wish I could train my kitties to vacuum the sofa..heheee

Hi Pye, I never had any problems with mine either, I dont remember having to shoo them down or anything. They didnt seem too interested in the food I was cooking anyway. lol Where they trying to tell me something?? Now thats an idea, and then you could appear on the Letterman Show....cats who vacuum their own hair off their own couch! ;o) Bay xx

We are pet owners...two big dogs and 5 cats...and the problems you describe about cat and dog hair is very true and something we battle constantly. So your points here are well taken and understood. In our case we are doing our best to avoid the situations you describe because I have been in homes where owners let them animals run wild with no concern about sanitary practices. We have are air purifiers in every room and we removed all the carpets from our 2,000 square foot house to avoid having hair and dander being trapped within it. Cats do tend to think they have the run of the house...but they can be trained to stay off all food preparation areas. When ours were kittens our vet suggested taking them by the scruff of the neck the way their mommies do and lift them off counters and tables with a firm..."No!" It takes persistence but they do get it eventually. Now they know they cannot go on counters and they will sit on the floor or on the area we feed them and just watch what we are doing in the kitchen. Hair on clothing is something that we are always facing but we keep a clothes brush nearby and in the car and brush ourselves off when we go out and have one handy for guests to do the same after visiting with us. We tell people before they come over to wear lighter colored pants...or be prepared to go home with pet hair. We don't have kids and our pets add a lot to the quality of our life. We have managed to make needed adjustments to keep the challenges of having mostly indoor animals to a minimum. Concern for the health and well being of ourselves and our guests is not something we do not take lightly...but everything in life is an exchange. Something along the same line as how some cannot fathom why you enjoy going to the stables in the morning...we all have things that add to our quality of life. Different 'strokes' for different folks. Interesting topic...and a great high five to less 'conscious' pet owners. Cheerio... Raia

Hi Raia, Ive seen the pictures of your home, and I can see that you do work very hard to keep it nice. Its beautiful!! Some people dont take the initiative like you have to go the extra mile and keep the hair to a minimum. If my Aunt would listen, I might just say something. But considering she allows it, what would be the point right? lol I hope I have not sounded like I was bashing all cat owners, and that if you had cats your house did or would look like this. Im strictly speaking of my Aunts house. I have had 2 cats in the house at once, and I just dont recall it being too terribly hard to keep them off there, unless they only did it when we were gone or sleeping. I also didnt seem to have trouble with hair, so if you can imagine this is just more than a few hairs here and there. lol Thanks for your thoughts Raia! Have a good weekend Bay xx

I have a problem with pet hair, not so much the cat as the dog. It sticks to the carpet and it's black. The vacuum won't pick it up and other fibres stick to the dog hair too. As well as the rugs throughout the house there is a long haired white rug (flokati) in the lounge room. It's slowly turning grey wuith the addition of my black dog's coat. As for the cat, he sometimes gets on the dining table, usually when I'm working there...I know I should have discouraged him as a kitten but.....my bad, I didn't, so now he comes up to investigate when I'm eating...luckily, I live alone but there is the odd occasion that someone drops in for coffee. Also, (this annoyed my daughter who came for a visit recently)I feed the cat on the kitchen counter top, in a corner, but close to where I prepare food. If I don't feed him there, the dog will eat his food. The cat likes to nibble at various times of the day, the dog wolfs everything down without chewing, or tasting for that matter. If someone can offer alternate suggestions, I'd bve happy to hear them. As I say, I live alone and I don't have a problem with it but others do.

Heavens no, that's not how you came across at all. I realise that for some it's a problem. My problem is not pet hair in food...it doesn't happen. Now my hair on the other hand sometimes ends up in my food...I so hate that...my hair is long. Yes, I tried the water bottle on my baby kitty but it didn't work. In fact, he loves water and is always investigating sprinklers and hoses etc...he even sits in the shower with me sometimes. What I meant was...how else can I feed him so as to keep his food away from the dog? Because of this discussion I decided to give Banjo a brush yesterday...lots of soft down came away. Today when I gave him a cuddle he had lots of loose hair...so, I guess I shouldn't have brushed him....lol.

Aah I see, sorry I misunderstood you! haha I dont know about any solution for feeding. Ive never had that problem, the cat ate indoors and the dog had a pen outdoors where he stayed, unless we were at home. Maybe seperate rooms or something. If you have the space. Dont move the dog, just move the cats food. Look up online Its me or the Dog. There might be some tips, its a show on tv this lady is really good with training animals. Bay xx

hi MsTickle, You seem more aware of it than my Aunt does atleast. She really acts like this is a very normal thing, for I guess in her mind, as someone pointed out to me, it is normal. They are HER cats and it different when they are yours versus someone elses. I didnt mean to sound so closed minded about the whole situation, I hope I didnt come across like that. If you really would like to keep the cat off certain places, a water bottle does the trick. It doesnt hurt them. You simply spray a fine mist of water in their face when they do something you dont want them doing and they will eventually get the hint. You can give that a try. :) Thank you for your thoughts on this! Bay xx

hi there, I have a dog as my pet, and this problem is with dogs too, and any other other pet i guess!! Your true when you say, its "Yuck" to pull out a Hair from the meal.... I think we can fix this problem by maintaining a secluded place to eat and keep pets away from that area completely......IT WILL REDUCE IT ATLEAST. It might sound impossible but we must compemsate our total freedom to have a healthy living with pets.!! take care!

Hi Evangleen, Your right, many dogs have long hair just like these cats my Aunt has. The dog I had for a pet, had really short hair and I didnt have a problem with it getting in my food. lol Maybe the longer hair stays in flight longer and travels more around the house. I think its possible to train your pets to stay away from areas like the kitchen counters and tables where you eat and prepare food. Its ones own personal decision really. Many people love their pets like they are their own kids, and treat them as such. Totally understandable for them, hard to deal with if your a guest. hehe Thanks! Bay xx

ahahahaha. I have one cat and he is the ruler of my apartment. He's got full reign to go where he wants. I pretty much have cat hair on any clothing that i wear. I pretty much eat cat hair every day. I don't really mind, I mean... he's my cat. I know people are all like omg that's so disgusting, but whatever...it hasn't killed anyone. I even cook for a cooking club and my cat is always inspecting what i'm making. You know, I try my best to keep cat hair out of that food cause I'd hate for them to eat my cats hair, but it happens. He's like my kid.

Well I'm glad I helped you to see that Bay. See I think bodily fluids are gross. Like I'd hate to clean up some strangers snot or pee or throw up. But I can clean up my cats hairballs like it's nothing, cause he's my kid. and most parents are like that with their human kids, it's just an animal! Redman is an interesting name for a dog. My cat btw is Reggie Cat and he's my little...well...gray man :p

Ray...... I understand you!! The reason I can is because of my Redman, hes passed on now, but he was my kid. And I let him get away with anything. lol He was a pit bull, so he didnt get on the counter tops or tables and help me cook. ;) He was actually well trained when it came to that, he didnt beg or jump up to see. But I didnt mind his kisses, or his hair or anything else about him. And I can see how it doesnt bother my Aunt, they are her cats, have been for years!!! I admit I didnt consider that for my Aunt until your response. Thank you! Bay xx

My cats hardly ever come inside and usually just lay on the couch. They do shed when you pet them but they mostly just follow you and when you sit down they either sit with you or wander off. Want to hear a gross story? Last year for Thanksgiving we went to oregon, my first time out of the state of california Anyways my boyfriends mom was babysitting a dog, little did I know we had to go take care of the persons other animals at their house. Every other day. I think three or four cats and ferrets. That places reeked! Cats were everywhere, walking on the tables...their litter boxes were so full of crap that the automatic scooper wouldnt work and they had just started pooping all over the house and next to and in front of the litter box. It was sick.

Ugh KB!! Thats just yuck. We have some "aquaintences" lol that live like that, not as bad as letting the animals poop all over, but they do have a odor to their house. They are the nicest people you would ever meet though, its just hard to sit at their house and enjoy their company. We tried it last week, and I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. The dog was in my lap, licking my face, and they wouldnt tell him to get down; I had to or give him attention lol. Its a pug or something, or Pomeranian??? I dont know but its not that big, but I rubbed its head, and my hand stunk. I was ready to go. They are good people, would do anything for you, give you things before anything else, but they live like horders. Stuff everywhere. What you described is not good for the animals either. Thats a shame, I feel badly for those cats. Bay Bay xx

Yes they do but before the Food gets prepared when I lived there I used disinfect the Tops You just can not stop Cats lying where they want to I am afraid I mean I would always try to keep them out the Kitchen when I was cooking they where not aloud in the Kitchen at all I have told the Kids that is what they have to do because of where they lie See all Cats are indoor and outdoor Cats I left them with the Kids as I was only aloud to bring Gissi where I live now but it would not have been fair to take them away from their Home as that is where they where from Kitten Stage 2 of them where born there It is not so bad when you keep on top of it with them but if your Auntie doesn't then yes it can happen that you have Cat hair in your Food

Hi Gabs, I know you cant keep them off there indefinately, but Im really talking about people letting them lie up there, without a care that they have been licking themselves and their hair is just floating all around. It might be a chore, but they could shoo them down when they see it happening. I agree that people can keep atop of things and keep it hair free, my Aunt just isnt one of them! lol Ive been in houses that you cant even tell they have cats, no hair, no smell, nothing.....and they have lots of cats. It just depends on how you take care of things. Bay xx

My cats aren't allowed on the counters or tables, but, I'm sure they go there when I'm not there. So, every morning, I give the counter tops a spritz of water and bleach. There is nothing ickier than having a hair in your food, animal or otherwise.

Hi BonBon, I get grossed out if my OWN hair has gotten in my mouth period. LOL Im just not sure how her place got like this, shes not a dirty person, my Aunt cleans her house, but the hair is just out of control. When I had cats, I did the same with the bleach water, cos I didnt know if they were when I was sleeping or not at home. They sure didnt do it while I was at home. Bay xx

Thats just gross! I dont have cats now but I did when I was younger. My mom NEVER let them on the counters. Im sorry but an animal should be on the floor that where it belongs! It would be like my husband coming home all grease balled {hes a mechanic} and standing on the counter!!

Hi copperkitten! Thats funny about your hubby, mine brings horse hairs home with him at times, he works in a stable. Its not bad though, one or two here and there, and I mostly find them when Im doing the wash. Somehow they end up in his pockets. lol I dont think they should be up there either. I had 2 cats at one time and I guess I didnt see it or they just didnt do it, I didnt have a problem with them on the table or in the kitchen. They mostly liked lying in the windows. I dont know, I guess some people just think its normal. Im not one of them! lol Bay xx

When I had cats, rhey were outdoor cats and no longer would be allowed in the house except to sleep. My son has a cat and so far, she is an indoor cat. She has her one place to sleep, and her own place to play and never would she be allowed on the kitchen table. I would hate to go into a house where there are cat hairs over everything. I mean my husband does not like when one of my hairs gets into the food, think of having so much cat hairs and vacuuming the carpet. That would drive me antsy. I do not have that much time.

Hi Suspenseful! I guess she is busy too. She works and so does my Uncle. I dont have that kind of time either, thats why I dont really have pets. I have this problem with my cats I find the trick is to check your hands for hair before starting to eat or prepare food, as this is how the hair ends up in your mouth. The only way to control the hair everywhere is to brush your cats regularly if they will let you and keep hoovering.

Hi Nancyrowina, Im not sure if that would help her any, the hair is all over, and I know she cleans it, it just accumulates quickly. Other than the cat hair, she is pretty clean. I know one of her cats which is a white persian is hard to brush, she bites. Shes really mean. lol I just cant take it though, I hardly eat there. I just cant do it. Bay xx

I do let the cat lay on the furniture though. It is too hard to keep her off. By the way, what is the picture of with your discussion? Is it blood or food? It looks really grose.

I have 2 kitties right now. (No, not the 'Kitties in Boots' that is my avatar- those are my two little darlings that recently became coyote food. I'm gonna cry if I keep talking about them though, oh well, to late. My avatar is a salute to them. I will never forget the little sweethearts.) Anyway, I wouldn't even consider allowing my kitties on the countertops or table or anywhere food was prepared. I didn't have any trouble teaching them that either... a few un-dainty whacks knocking them off any time they jumped up, with a loud mouthy "GET OFF THERE!" was all it took. I love my kitties a lot, but I don't like their hair in my food! They have their own kitty door so they spend most of their time outdoors, but I also have a dog (who hates cats) and between them all my carpets get really hairy... I have to vacuum at least every other day, and it's better if I do it every day because I do yoga and I don't like breathing pet hair. The worst problem I have is my bedding, because the kitties like to sleep with me and I love to feel them cuddled up at my feet or behind my knees, it helps keep me really warm & feeling well-loved. So I have to expend a bit of time and effort shaking out my quilt every day and using one of those sticky pet hair rollers on it every couple of days, but it's worth it! I have more trouble keeping them from snuggling up right by my face than I ever had keeping them off the counters though.

Hi ZigZagbuddha, See now, I wish my Aunt put forth your efforts. I know it can be time consuming but it must be done! She would never raise her voice at her kitties. I never had a problem with my cats either, I had 2 in the house at once. My mom had a cat and she never got on the counter or table, she would be on the sofa or one of our beds, but she was short haired, I think that makes a difference too. My Aunts cats are both long haired and white. I cant have a good time unless Im sitting there wishing it was time to go. Im sorry this made you cry, thats terrible what happened. HUGS!!! Bay xx

Hi Bayleigh. I had a cat when I was a little girl, but it would always stay outsite. we had under the stair a little palce where was her bowl and her bed and everything she need. My room was upstairs and we don't use AC where I live in the houses, so in the summer I would let my balcony door open to have a fresh air. And this crazy cat would always come from the three to jump on my balcony and come to my room. She scared me so many times, because she come the most of the times in midnight and scared me to s**t Lol Also through the day she would come through the stairs to the kitchen and we would find her to in our trash can. It was crazy, but at least we catch her all the time at right time, she never ate our food or went to our plates. I cannot imagine that, to eat something and then pull hair from your mouth. Yucky.
